Currently we have one of the ginormous AT9 dishes. I'm wondering what the advantages are to the new AU9 or Slimline dish. Is it strictly size and is the Slimline significantly smaller than the AT9? Also, any chance I could get D* to upgrade our AT9 to a Slimline at no cost?

There is no advantage between the two.

The AT-9 is a little larger than the Slimline (Au-9) but not much.

If you have a problem with the dish and you have the protection plan DirecTV will replace the LNB's if they are the problem for free. If they don't have the LNB's for the AT-9 any more the will have to swap it for a Slimline.

If you don't have the protection plan they will charge you for a $70 service call. If you need the dish swap I believe they will charge you even more if you don't have the protection plan.

I doubt very much if you will be able to get the just to swap it because you want it swapped.

One advantage (which doesn't help you since you already have an AT9 installed)..... while it's not that much smaller than the AT9 and it is still a lot larger than any of the other DirecTV dishes, the fact that it has the word "slim" printed on the dish lets you say to anyone who complains about the new "big" dish that you just put up that they should be glad that you at least put up the "slim" model dish. This may be helpful in HOA situations where someone questions why your new dish is so much bigger than all the other DirecTV dishes.

I actually like the look of my AT9 -- its just look more MANLY. Steelers fans probably would prefer the "Slimline".
