Watched the whole 1st period on MSG, Now all of a sudden Program isn't available in my area. WTF?

I thought RSN got all preseason hockey and wasnt effected by center ice if a game was scheduled.

What good is the RSN?

Yea, what gives. I was told that preseason games don't apply to blackout rules. I am even a CI subsciber. Ugh, frustrating. I was enjoying that 1st period damnit

This is bad move, bad PR to just black a game out after one period like this...

bonscott87
09-21-07, 06:13 PM
First, CI has nothing to do with pre-season games.

Second, an RSN can blackout anything they want, including pre-season games, coaches shows, etc. I'd guess that MSG was *supposed* to be blacked out the whole game but DirecTV fubar'd and forgot to do it until after the 1st period.

psunate77

There was a list posted a few weeks ago that showed what RSN would give you and one thing was PS Hockey games.

I guess this was a lie also.. RSN should be free as most programming is commercials and highlight shows.

Yea, I knew CI had nothing to do with preseason. But I have been told before that preseason games were not blacked out. I did not realize it was up to the RSN. Oh well, another disappointment. First no HD then no hockey. My hockey withdrawals will have to continue.

same here in chicago= i just hung up with tech and she put me on hold forever, came back and said they are getting a lot of calls - which actually surprised me-- and acknowledged directv may have made a mistake... she said they're 'working on it'....

Or it could be the owner. Like the Blackhawks. The owner refuses to allow any home games to be broadcast in Chicago, period. So if you are a Blackhawks fan that lives in Chicago you have no way to watch the team on TV, your own RSN is blacked out. See the other thread in this forum about that if your curious.

Really plain stupid for a sport than needs all the fans they can get. Alienating people that care enough to want to watch pre-season games. Or even replays of them. Brilliant!

I guess it's a new policy. In the past, we were able to view NHL preseason games w/ the sports pack.

Whether NHL, MLB why do they have to blackout the 'replays' tooooooooooooo, I just don't understand it!?!?!

The Red Wings game on Thursday was on FSN Detroit black out free. I caught a few minutes of that one here in Cleveland.

The Red Wings are smart and want to expand as much as possible accross the country. You see so many Wings fans in the stands wherever they go. I'd bet they wouldn't black out regular season games out of market if the NHL would let them.

They actually get it.

I sent a email to the NHL directly, a couple months ago, telling them the same thing. It was after turning to FSNY and seeing a replay of an Islander game FROM LAST YEAR being blacked out(and I'm a Rangers fan).

If they want to raise the popularity of their sport, they CANNOT be blacking things like this out. Why, a game, from LAST YEAR is being blacked out, I haven't a clue. ANY hockey that people can see will add to the chance that more people will watch the live games.

BTW, the NHL cared so much, they never sent me a reply :nono2:

That's why th NHL can't be considered one of the four major sports anymore. At this point, I would certainly put them behind NASCAR, and maybe even the PGA.

I too was screaming at my TV last night. I was flipping back and forth from the Yankees in HD on 730 and Rangers on 621 and at 8pm, MSG was black.

Did anyone call D* and ask about this preseason blackout?

I can't get to my TV now, but is the Rangers/Phily pre-season game tonight blacked out on MSG network OUTSIDE the NY DMA?

At least I could record the Rangers 2007-2008 Season Preview Special @ 6pm.

I did send a email to D* and was told that it should have not been blacked out due to and they were unable to determine why.

I have noticed the blackouts were on FSNY only for Islanders and Devils games. There was no issue on MSG for the Rangers games.

Well, it certainly isn't D*. They just black out what they're told. D* has no interest in blacking anything out, it's a huge pain for them. If it were up to them they wouldn't black out anything.

if it isn't directv then how do you explain the inconsistencies? this preview show has been on multiple times but this one time was blacked out. the game friday nite was blacked out after the first period, yet saturdays game was shown in its entirety. last season a preseason game was blacked out- i called and complained and the game came on a bit later.
something just isn't right... and i'm doing my damndest to find out!

I agree with all that you have stated. Still, though, DirecTV does occasionally make a mistake and either black something out erroneously or not black something out that it should (but we don't complain about the latter ;) ).

When one of these apparent mistakes does happen, it can be extremely frustrating to get to the root of the issue. CSRs are worse than useless in many cases -- not that I blame them, it's a complex web of rules and they don't have ready access to anything but boilerplate answers. Often they'll come up with very creative (but wrong) answers.

Thankfully, such errors aren't frequent.

well, evidently it is directv getting trigger happy-- as i stated earlier, i emailed quite a few folks and received the following email from the NY Rangers

Thanks for contacting the New York Rangers.

We have received assurances from the NHL that the next MSG preseason game will not be blacked out on Center Ice. Also, any airings of the Inside the Rangers show that are attached to the game would not be blacked out on Center Ice. If you subscribe to MSG through a package of regional networks, you can watch Inside the Rangers at any of its scheduled times.

Sincerely,
New York Rangers

I also received a telephone call from the NHL and spoke at length with a gentleman who reiterated the same.

That is an interesting bit of information, considering that I have VERY RARELY gotten anything past the final score of an Islanders game before the channel went offline on NHLCI, and I have NEVER gotten anything before the actual broadcast was scheduled to go on the air. This is with 12 years experience with NHLCI (since 1995). I have NEVER seen a pre-season game on NHLCI. The channels aren't even in the guide yet!

now, i've heard others say that too about not seeing preseason games, but i have watched them every year-with the occasional blackout (CI since 98). but i'm talking via the RSN and not CI (i have the sports pack). you are so right about the CI channel going offline immediately following conclusion of a game. but i think the difference is watching these shows on the RSN, not CI.

Agreed, its just that after paying megabucks for NHLCI, I don't want to pay for the sports pack too just to catch a couple of pre-season games. I can catch those on Islanders TV for free.

I think the Rangers guy might be confused since there are no pre-season games in the Center Ice package and there certainly aren't any pre-game or post game shows in Center Ice.

As someone noted above, DirecTV certainly could have made a mistake, but when in doubt they will blackout. Could be the Rangers and MSG not knowing what the other is blacking out. Just like it is well known that YES purposely blocks the various Yankee non-game programs out of market. MSG could certainly do the same thing but the Rangers aren't aware of it. In any case, if it was a mistake then hopefully the Rangers will get with MSG and have them correct it for you (which sounds like perhaps they have).

Yep. The Wings know that selling $250 jersey's in Arizona makes them a heck of a lot more money then trying to black out the games. ;)
