I don't understand how dishnetwork can modify a recievers software while the reciever is turned off.Is it done by phone line if you are plugged in? I had a fox channel paid for and one morning it was gone although it was there the nite before. Thanks for the answer!

When your receiver is off, it isn't really powered off. It's just in "standby" mode and is in fact still powered on. With DirecTV receivers (except TiVo) we receive software upgrades via the satellite, usually very early in the morning, when most people are sleeping. They basically send a signal to the receiver which tells it to tune to a particular transponder and receive a data download. Within that data download is the software update. I would assume that with Dish network it's the same thing.

TiVo receivers are different because the software updates come from TiVo, and are sent over the phone line during the daily call. UltimateTV uses both methods to obtain the software updates, and the latest version (3.5) is sent via the satellite.

Yup, the reciever is never truly off unless you unplug it from the power source. Those little "clicks" you hear in the middle of the night when you shut your reciever off is the reciever dialing out.

Tommi,

Your DBS receiver as well as every DBS receiver ever made is always supplying voltage to the LNBF's on the Dish and always receiving signal from Space. When the receiver is in "Standby Mode" what you would call off the receiver will update EPG data look for Firmware updates and download them if available.

Your receiver uses virtually the same amount of Electric current either on or "OFF"(Standby Mode). All DISH Firmware updates are done via Satellite except for the Web TV Client software in the discontinued Dishplayer receiver.
