Hey all...
My family has been using Dish network for a couple of years now (2 - 2.5 maybe?) Anyway - we started out with a 'regular' package at our previous home and then when we moved to our current home we upgraded via the dishmover program thing to dish 500. Wonderful. Life went on, lots of channels to choose from etc.
Eventually the inevitable started happening though - squabbles over who wants to watch what, etc. Fine - we ask 'can we get a 2nd receiver' - 'Why yes you can!' we are told. Some people come out, set it up, cfg it, etc... cool! Now I have my own receiver out in my garage/office where I can watch TechTV, OLN, and Speedvision to my hearts content and my Wife/kids can watch whatever they want. Wonderful - life goes on again.
Economy goes to hell in a handbasket - I get laid off. Life ain't wonderful anymore.... ;( I do (finally!) manage to land a job - BUT - its in a different part of the state and I'll have to stay there during the week and come home on weekends. {sigh} Its a job and we can pay bills again - deal with it.
So.... I'm staying down here (Binghamton, NY) working and watching (and paying for) local cable tv. I'm writing checks one evening paying bills and one of those is my DISH network bill? It occurs to me - ~why~ am I paying this when I'm never even home to watch it. Well - the kids and wife watch it, ok. Hey.... I have a 2nd receiver..... hmmmmmm. So, long story short - I scrounge up a lmbf (or whatever its called thing) and a friend of mine from home knows a person who has some old dish thing laying around in his garage from when he moved into the house (turns out to be a dish 300 (I guess) dish. Cool! I have all the 'stuff' I'm gonna need - all I gotta do is hang this thing, aim it, get a signal and tell Time Warner cable to take a hike!
Long story short: I have the dish setup and am getting a good strong signal here in Binghamton, but I'm missing a lot of the channels that I get when I'm at home. ;( I pay for a 500 package - how come I'm not getting all of the channels?? The only thing that I can figure (and I don't know hardly anything about these systems) is that the two receivers, when connected at the same time at home must share some of the signaling or something at the dual lmbf @the dish on the roof. The 'main' receiver at home is also a slightly different model than the auxiliary one I have. I will be happy to provide makes, specs, more detail, etc... if some of ya'll in here can offer assistance on what I'm going to have to do to get all of my channels. I have already ditched the cable tv, so I've sort of committed to this! ;)
TIA folks!

dawgboy,
What you're probably missing is a feed from the 110 slot.
You can remedy that with a DISH 500 and either a second
LNBF, twin, or quad. Since you're only connecting to a single
receiver, a second single LNBF and an SW21 should work fine.
You could opt for a second dish instead, pointed at the 110 slot.

Just don't order PPV on your receiver (at least don't plug it into a phoneline) and you should be fine. RJS's suggestions on the Dish500 are fine also - to make things really nice, you should have the same setup at both places in regards to switches/ LNB's etc - then you can easily move the reciever around and use it both places.

They say this is legal too, they allow this, as long as it is not multiple family households. Some people have a cabin which is a seperate place but still the same household. There are some gray issues, but it would work just fine. They just do not want multiple families sharing the same account. Its a pretty gray issue.

The Dish residential agreement specifically forbids this. I am not sure if they could ever catch you but they have bothered to prohibit it.

Thanks for the quick feedback guys. On the gray area regarding this... I'm not living here, away from my family and principal residence by choice - it is a neccessity. I'm paying for this thing (dish) so I better damn well be able to use it when and where I want to. My take on it anyway. I do (on the other side of the coin) understand the concern of letting other family members share a common account but thats not the case here. I'm just a schmuck who wants to watch his tv. ;)
Thanks again!

Hey dawgboy,
Welcome to DBSTalk.Com :hi:
Yes, you will need a Dish 500 to receive all of the same channels you do at home.
What you are doing may be viewed as illegal BUT not really in the way the rule was intended. The rule was setup so a customer could not share a subscription with other non-paying individuals or families. You are simply using your subscription in another area but still paying for it. Just don't plug your receiver into a phone line and you should be okay.
P.S. I know Dish reads these forums and I will probably catch flak but hey, IMO there are certain rules that should be used as "guidelines" rather than the all powerful truth.

I do agree, but just to ease some concern, Charlie Ergen, Dish Network CEO, has said himself that it was o.k. to take the dish to a second location that you may have. They have this rule, but do not enforce it in instances in your case, just in cases where there are indivual households.

Lots of controversy as to what Charlie said. To me he was quite possibly he was talking about an RV situation which is a different issue----there is an exemption.
The bottom line is that the providers do NOT allow this. However they do not go after subs who do it. In this case however you are violating the rule. You have SIMULTANEOUS service at two sites so they might ask you to pay ----but will they?
The forums allow these discussions so.........

Chris, Jacob, Geronimo, et all...
Thanks again for the feedback guys. Chris - apologies in advance as I didn't realize that they (DISH) may pop in here from time to time. I will give them kudos for that though as it does at least show some pro-active participation/discussion(?) with thier user base on likes/dis-likes. Hopefully they won't give you any grief.
Geronimo... a rule is a rule. Black & white I suppose. (So isn't murder and OJ got away with it... ) My take, again - grey, yes - is that I'm not here by choice and I obviously can't be in both places simutaneously. Should/if they (dish) raise a stink about this matter due to this thread and they actually want me to ante up payment, then I'll just dump 'em to spite 'em. My wife and kids might not be happy but the local cable provider is available at home now too (provider=Time Warner, home=Wayland). I wouln't be too keen on it as I already pay thier ransom for cable internet access (which costs more than the tv does!) but if push comes to shove... ;(
Thanks again guys.

Dawgdoy,
All of Dish Networks Top 50, Top 100 and most premium channels come from the 119 Orbital slot and can be received with a Single Dish 300. Since 119 is maxed out Dish added all the additional Top 150 channels and some Premiums as well as extra PPV channels, NHL Center Ice and NBA Season Pass to the 110 Orbital slot and you either need 2 single Dish 300 with SW21 switch or one Dish 500 with either a TWIN LNBF or Two Seperate LNBF's and a Switch to get all Dish Core Service to one receiver.

I don't think they will come after because of this thread. They don't know who you are. I also wouldn't comapre this to murder--although I dont quite follow that analogy.
I am just telling you that it is forbidden and IF they find out they may shut you off from one location or both. I would not have jumped in. It is your decsion but another poster provided erroneous advice. I just thought you should know.
This is an interesting thread. Now I have not re-read what I signed 6 years ago, nor am I about too, . . . but
If a person has a single account set up and is paying for 2 receivers, . . . and then takes 1 of those receivers with them on the road (e.g. truck driver, RV, vacation cabin, or in dawgboys case to a remote weekday work location), how is this effecting what Dish has provided?
When both receivers are at home, 2 SIMULTANEOUS channels can be tuned. When 1 receiver is at home and 1 is remote, 2 SIMULTANEOUS channels can be tuned. This is the same thing and the subscriber did not get any additional services from DISH.
Now, with that said, it may still be prohibited by the contract, but logic should prevail in this situation and it is unlikely that if it is illegal anyone would pursue this because there is not added benefit to the consumer.
Dawgboy, I assume that this is the way you are getting your channels moved from home to the work location, . . . by either moving the receiver or the smart card.

Truck drivers and RVs have special exemptions.
You can argue all day about what you think the rules ought to be but if you signed the residential agreement you accepted their terms. And yes there is added benefit to have service at two separate locations.
BTW it is not ILLEGAL but you are subject to CIVIL penalties----at least in theory.
But again this rule is commonly violated and people do get away with it. That I understand. But let's also understand that it is a violation of the contract you signed---and I fail to see how logic says it is OK to violate terms you agreed to.
My only point here is that yes you can get away with it but you are rationalizing that this action is OK. Having said that I suppose we all rationalize from time to time.
I moved from Atlanta to the Georgia coast 2 months ago. I have yet to inform E* of my new address for the sole purpose of being able to continue to receive Atlanta locals. I'm paying for what I get - the "Everything" pak + Atl, so who cares? I surely don't.
Jax, FL locals are now available in my new DMA, but I don't yet have them via Dish. I may get them if I decide to spring for basic cable (Adelphia), plus I would get some Savannah locals on cable.
So who am I hurting? No one. It's the FCC (which favors the broadcasters) that force me to do this in order to get what I want. The airwaves 'belong' to the people, not the broadcasters. I'm one of the people.
I'm paying Dish over $80/m to get the programming I want and by damn I'm going to get it one way or the other.
Screw NAB and the FCC. Let them find me if they can!
