Let's hear your real successful fixes to a no 498 slide display. We need to pass along that info to those who still get a black screen. Be as detailed as you can. Thanks.

I just went to a channel before it and pushed channel up and bam it worked

I punched up 498 and it took about 5 seconds and the congrats message showed
up.

1 of 2 Hr20's had gray screen. I used Tom's suggestion and started 2 recordings then canceled them. Now both Hr's are in congratulations mode.

Soo.... If you have an HR20 did both tuners work?

I've tuned each of my HR20's to 498 several times to see if they ever change the slide, put some moving images on that channel, or whatever.

The Congrats message worked several times on both my HR20s and then I had a slight little glitch, with an easy solution, and a very interesting side effect.

One time, when I tuned to 498, I got the "black screen 'o death".

I waited about 30 - 40 seconds to make sure it wasn't just taking an unusually long time to come in and .... nope, nothing.

Then I hit "pause".

The last frame of the channel I had previously been tuned to popped onto the screen!

Then I hit "play".

The nanosecond I hit play, the "congratulations" slide popped on.

More evidence to support my theory that the "blank screen" problem has to do with the fact that this is the very first time D* has transmitted a static slide that was 1) In MPEG4 and 2) in 1080i. The receivers just don't quite know what to do with the static image. I'm betting that with "real channels" with images that move, this will simply not be an issue at all.

Well, they transmit static slides in MPEG2 all the time in 1080i in the 90s when a game ends, etc.

Probably first MPEG4 static slide. Only MPEG4 before this week was the locals.

I get a black screen on 498.
This thing sounds like some kind of science project.
Stand on one foot and rub your head and turn to the channel real fast
I dont think the average joe is going to go through all this for HD

I was only getting the slide on one tuner until I accidentally hit the instant reply button on the remote. Now I see it on both. Sweet!

I'm pretty sure the local RSN HD games I get on 96 are MPEG4, and they show a static slide just fine.

Probably first MPEG4 static slide. Only MPEG4 before this week was the locals.

That's a difference that may be significant.

The difference between 480i and 1080i in MPEG2 is really "nothing" in the sense that it's the exact same decoding, just a different resolution.

I'm thinking "static image in MPEG4" is a problem of some sort for the receiver.

Every single "solution" I've read involves forcing the receiver to change the image on the screen until slide can be seen.

Pausing and unpausing, going into some menu and back out, changing the display resolution...

Any of these things may be shocking the decoder out of it's "brain lock" caused by the static image.

I think the fact that the one time I got the black screen hitting pause showed me a frame from the previous channel that it had been tuned to is a huge, gigantic clue that it's an MPEG decoding thing.

I just posted this on the data collection thread and it seems relevant here as well:

I can get the slide to pop up on 498 by switching to any MPEG-4 local then returning to 498. Worked yesterday to get rid of the gray screen, just had it work again tonight. The channel 72/73 trick did not work- I haven't tried some of the other tricks which have been suggested. 480 and 481 have never been a problem. Receiver: HR20-100; Local channels: Philadelphia; Dish: slimline; both B-band converters hooked up clean; multiswitch: don't know the name, but its big, unpowered, installed with the HR20 last month (installer said it could drive up to 8 receivers). Hope this helps.

using trick play on channel 498, or pausing/and the playing the channel again while on the grey screen brings the slides up for me.

498 showed up on all 3 of my receivers no problem.. of course after I had my dish re-aligned so I could properly receive 103(b)

I have tried every trick here since this started and just now the jump forword and jump back has started to work for me now.

On my HR20-100, the pause and then FF trick did it, but on the HR20-700 it had no effect. But, I had my 700 swapped out for another 100 today (long story), so I have 2 100s now, so...I guess I don't care about the 700 any more. :sure:

grey screen on 498. tuned to two of my locals (not ota)tuned to 498 again and now it works.

This is the fix that worked for me:

I typed the channel numbers on the remote in this sequence

498
480
481
498

After that, I could always go back to 498 directly from other channels or by using channel-up/channel-down.

Before I did the channel sequence above, I had tried unsuccessfully, trick-play, changing resolution, channel 72/73/498 and none of those tricks worked on my two hr20s.

Hr20-700;

Had gray/black screen for longest time (from start of broadcasting 498 through last night), until 9300/9301 test channels; save for a couple glitches earlier this afternoon, I get the slide (& music) every time I tune to 498.

Yes. You should also have sound.

I had to pull the plug on my HR20 this morning and plug it back in. When I did that no 498; no failure notification, no audio, no nothing, just a black screen.

I checked the transponder strengths on all my satellites and tuners, and when I exited the sat test menu, 498 was there, along with the audio.

I rebooted my h20-100 and it appeared and it came on.
only problem is it takes like 10 seconds to come on but i think thats just a problem with the hdmi (1.1)

I had to adjust my dish elevation 1 degree up and it worked. Before that i got searching for satellite.

When I upgraded to HD ( HR20-700 ) last Wed, I never changed my service address I used to get east/west nets ( NY + LA ). But you can't get the HD of those nets without applying with new waivers.

I couldn't get channel 498 ( grey screen ) . Tried all the tricks.

Called and moved back to Florida . I get Orlando HD networks.

As soon they were turned on - I got 498 with no problems.

I used an H20-100 and it worked fine by just going to the channel although I had to wait about 15 seconds for the picture to show but the music was going instantly.

I tuned 498 on one of my H20-600s last night when we got home from the mountains. Lots of pixellation, music breaking up, etc. Tuning to any other channel afterwards, I still had audio issues - a low pitched beep at about 1/2 sec intervals.

A RBR fixed all the issues, and channel now looks and sounds great.

498 comes in fine on my HR20 but I get a black screen and 771 searching for signal on my H20. I've rebooted and redone guided setup a couple times to no avail.

498 works for me on both HR20 (-100 and -700 )

No multiswitch, 2 lines connected to the -100, 1 line to the -700, AT9, RG6, 4 lines total.

-100 installed 07/07; -700 installed 09/07 (manufacture date: 5/28/07)

Changing to 498 is very similar to changing to a MPEG4 local. It will pause, gray screen, pause, and switch to the channel.

what exactly am i supposed to see on ch. 498? I did the b-band test channel and it said searching for signal just fine. Then i guess i am supposed to see a picture on 498? However all i saw was some Test 110 C or something in a blue box at the bottom of the screen. I have 1 line running to a an H20 and i have an inline diplexer for OTA signals. I was told that the diplexer might be the problem, is this possible?

I thought I was all set to go for the new HD Channels. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. I've got my Slimline 5 LNB dish, the newer style multi-switch, the B Band Converters hooked up to my HR20. Channels 480 & 481 both say that the BBC are confirmed working. But when I tune to channel 498 I don't get the "Congratulations Screen" that everyone is talking about. My screen is grey, and when I hit the "Info" button it says that I'm supposed to see an informational slide.

What should I do? Please advise....

There is no sure-fire cure. Many of us are in this situation. Keep in mind that this might not mean anything about seeing the actual channels when they go live.

One thing I intend to try when I get home is to disconnect the RG6 from the two tuners for several seconds, then reconnect it, and see if the "loss of signal-recapture of signal" does anything.

I have tried several reboots and upluggings and my HR20-100 just does not display the slide.

This is more then likely your problem. Remove both diplexors and retest. If it then works search the forum for the diplexor "trick" to allow the use of OTA over a sat cable run
