My parents have dish and have the DVR capabilities in the living room and their bedroom. I have viewing in my room but no access to the DVR. I'm thinking about purchasing a DVR online. Will Installation just be a matter of hooking the dish cable to it, or will I have to get activation by dish and a monthly charge on top of it?

You will have to activate it, pay $5 per month for additional receiver and $5 per month DVR fee unless you can get a 501, 508 or 721 receiver because they do not have a DVR fee.
