View Full Version : MPEG 4 Channels
Besides the locals that are available in MPEG4, what other channels if any today do we receive from DTV in MPEG4? Of course, this is prior to the upcoming new channels soon
Are the MLB EI games broadcast on Ch 730 and 731 MPEG4? I know that the ones on Ch 94 and 95 are MPEG2.
Thanks

Regional RSN HD's are MPEG4
but those RSN's are only available to certain areas...I guess my question should be are there any National broadcasts today that are MPEG4?

Are the NY city (East Coast) HD locals MPEG4? I get the NBC and Fox HD affiliates on a waiver. Just curious if they are MPEG4? That would make me feel a little better about the upcoming rollout, since my HR20-700 cannot display the 498 slide.

No. They are MPEG2

They are MPEG2 (though MPEG4 are available as well if you are in NYC).
I believe they are if you are watching them on ch 2,4,5,7 but are not if you watching them on Ch 80,82,84,86...these are MPEG2

Seeing as his location is "Bama", I was assuming he would need to see them on the 80's. ;)
I wonder what % of the people that are having issues with getting ch 498 (getting a grey or black screen) are folks who do not have MPEG4 local channels available to them in their area.
It seems as though for some reason, there is correlation between the two
Therefore, based on previous posts here, it seems like this week will be the first channels that are MPEG4 on a national basis

I do receive the NYC HD locals on the 80 channels. I don't have HD locals, so I can't verify that, and that's what has me worried.

You need to be worried. Check everything in the signal chain from the dish to the receiver, make sure you have a compatible multiswitch (Zinwell WB68 or WB616), ensure your BBCs are connected and that your receiver is getting good signals on every transponder on 103(b).

I was one who could not get the slide on 498 only a black screen despite every trick posted and a few I tried out of desperation, however I was fortunate to check here before going to bed the other night and caught Earl's post about the three hour test channels
When the channels showed up in my guide I tuned into both of the test channels without incident and then thought well let me try the slide now, and it was there and has remeined there since.
I do not have locals in HD either via D*. I also noticed what I thought might be a trend with no HD locals and the slide not showing up (although my opinion on these type things is worth less than the paper it is printed on :) ) Fortunately for me and several others who caught Earl's announcement tuning to a mpeg-4 channel that wasn't static was the trick for me and I hope will work for the others who have the correct equipment and no authorization issues
I'm in upstate NY and have been having problems with 498 - just wondering if the YES HD Network which is next to the standard broadast in MPEG4? I receive that and the Mets HD Channel with no problems - Thanks

Yes, YES HD on 622 and SNY HD on 625 are MPEG4.

I do have a Zinwell WB68, AT9 dish, BBC's are connected and passed the 499 test (on both tuners) and I have mid 80's to upper 90's on all 103b transponders. It also passes the 480/481 test channels. I missed the 9300/9301 test. I've changed from native on to native off. All resolutions (480i, 720p, 1080i, etc), connected via component. Followed all "fix" recommendations, and still a black screen on 498.
My H20 passes everything and displays 498 fine with sound...

did you get a chance to watch the two channel previews on late Sat night on ch 9300 and 9301?
You can usually tell which channels are MPEG 4 during a rain storm. The MPEG 4 channels always seem to fade out before any others.

Man, I don't know what to tell you. A good number of people who voted in the 9300/9301 poll noted that they could not see 498 but could still see those channels so you have SOME grounds to be optimistic.
Hmm. . . here's a totally left-field suggestion. Replace the cables from your switch running to the HR20 and then re-run the test channel. Alternately, at least remove them both entirely at each end (receiver and switch) and then reinstall them, then try again. If that doesn't scare away the gremlins (or reveal a couple of marginal connections somewhere), I don't know what else you can do except wait for channels to go live and see what happens.

The easy way to tell what's MPEG4 is, if you have a recorder, FFx1. If it's smooth, it's MPEG2. If it's a little jerky, it's MPEG4.

ASIDE: FWIW, I paused and FF'd one of the MPEG4 test channels and it seemed smoother than I was used to. Perhaps higher bitrates (and more i-frames) are being used for encoding. Conversely, maybe it was just late and I was tired. :D

but at this point, is it then accurate to say that other than HD locals and/or RSN's, there are no other MPEG4 channels being broadcast, which means there are no current national MPEG4 channels....that is until sometime later this week

Yes, that is accurate. Unless you want to count channel 498 :)

As much as I hate getting in the crawl space of my house, I may do some experimenting tonight. I think my first step is to take my H20 in the bedroom to the rec room where the HR20 currently resides and connect it to both cables and see if it will work. Also, take the HR20 to the bedroom and try it there.
I might need to check and see what cable the intallation guy ran. The HR20 was a "new" run to the rec room, so the installer ran that. I (personally) ran the (pre-existing run) RG6 cable to the bedroom. But, if I'm getting good signal quality to the HR20 on 103b, then the cable should not be the issue, right??
I'm by no means an expert, but I have installed a few systems myself, so I have a pretty good understanding of the system setup and connections.
