I have Directtv with HD service, I want to get the new channels when they become available. Since I have HD right now, I have the right dish already? Also if I want to switch one of my directtv box for one that support the new HD channels do I have to call them and have a guy come and install it? Can I just switch the box myself?
Thanks

To get the new HD channels you must have the five LNB dish, either the new slimline or side car version. That will need to be professionally installed by DTV if you don't have one. It is fairly easy to tell if you have the new dish or not by simply looking at it. The 5 LNB dish is physically larger then the 3 LNB dish and are pretty easy to tell apart.
As far as swapping out your current receiver for a H20 or HR20, that is something you can do yourself.

If you aren't sure on the dish, you can see a picture of the two 5LNB dishes that will support the new HD channels at http://www.directv.com/DTVAPP/global/contentPageNR.jsp?assetId=P4370040
RegGeek, for that link & pict's now i know which dish I have,(sidecar) but the slimeline looks a lot neater. Clato

No problem, Clato. Glad to help. I also have the sidecar version and have experienced "dish envy" when seeing the newer one.

What are the HD-only channels being launched, aside from The Smithsonian Channel?

If you order the box through DirecTV (sometimes you can get a better deal that way), they don't just send the boxes to you - they set up an installation (except in very rare situations). If you are swapping a straight up HD receiver for an SD receiver or HD DVR for an SD DVR, you should be able to swap them yourself, if you can get your hands on the box without an install). If you will be replacing a standard SD receiver with an HD DVR, you would need to run (or have someone run) and additional line from the dish or multi-switch.
