I can't believe that Directv wants my used leased HR10-250. I was primed to sell it but good thing I called. The installer said I could do what ever I wanted with it but not so according to Directv. They are sending a return label so they can get it back, what a waste of time and money on their end.

Possible double post sorry

They told me the same thing and left it with me anyway. By the way, when they replace a bought unit you get one in return. No lease is what they told me on a swap out with their insurance coverage

Hey, stranger things have happened. That's why you wait. Now the question is, will the return box ever show up?

Might want to double check that, the HR20-100 they replaced my HR10-250 with through the protection plan IS leased and I had to call and get the 2 year commitment corrected. Although I kept the blon HR10-250

My purchased HR10-250 was not collected and no one ever indicated that it would be.

What in the world could D* be doing with these? Why would they want them?
I certainly hope that D* has some sort of recycling policy in place. I'd hate to have these units simply show up in some landfill.

There are still a lot of HR10's out there under protection plans. I suspect they are not being manufactured anymore so pulling in the leased units to be used as refurb replacements is not a bad idea. It's hard to imagine someone not wanting and demanding a HR20 as a replacement though.
Also, D* is slated to release a major software upgrade early next year with a bunch of added features. Another odd move considering no new Tivo based units are currently being sold. You would think any development would be limited to just maintenance on all Tivo firmware. I was shocked when my HR10 got the folder view upgrade a while back.

I asked my installer if he was going to take the two HR10's with him and he said, "I don't want them."

If they do send you a box and you return it, but SURE to get the tracking number off the box before you give it to FedEx.
That way when D* calls 3 weeks later and asks "Where is the box we sent you?" you can give them the tracking number. It stops them from pestering you...
I got a replacement HR20 for my HR10 under the protection plan and promptly got a 2 year commitment. I called a few times to complain but it is such a discomfort to talk to D* that I finally gave up.
They didnt want my HR10 and good thing because I repaired it and put it back in use.
When D* installed my HR20,the installer called D* to activate everything.During his conversation with D*,he asked twice to have a Fedex box sent.It never arrived.I called D* FOUR TIMES and got different answers. The last csr(in retention) said "We don't want the Tivo units back...period.I don't think D* wants to pay S/H and then have to dispose of the returned HR10s.

It'll be more like very limited use once the new HD channels are launched.:)

They might be using them in there Latin American system. I know old cell phones get reconditioned and sold in places like Africa, India and Latin America. Maybe they are planning on using them that way.

Free is a relative thing. If they give you credits off your bill for the next 12 months it can work out to almost free in the end.
I'll reiterate, do not listen to the installer. Ours also said they were not taking HR10's back.
We called to swap 2 HR10 for 2 HR20's and got a $0.00 deal.
One of the HR10's was owned, the other a lease. A couple weeks after the install, D* billed us for the non-returned leased unit ($400 or so).
They never once indicated they wanted it back nor did they send us the return label. Simply got a big billing notice. So we called and they promptly sent a return label for it.
I think if you tell them you're going to use it in another room, they'll leave it with you for the extra $5/month. Maybe 6-12 months down the road, they'll stop wanting any of them back.
