I recently took advantage of the Dishin' It Up offer to upgrade my older 942 to the ever so gorgeous ViP722. I must say the black goes great with the rest of my equipment. Two weeks post upgrade I get an empty box from Dish asking for their old receiver back. But the 942 isn't theirs, I paid in full for it 2 years ago. There was never a lease charge on my bills.

So my question is, will Dish not give me my $100 if i don't return it or are they just hoping I'm a sucker and will ship it back so they can make some more $$ by selling it refurbished? Who's Dishin' who here?

when you "upgrade" it's like trading in your car when "upgrading" to a new one - you are essentially selling the 942 for the $100

Return of an owned receiver is optional. If you have any doubts, you can call Dish and make sure. When I upgraded from my owned 6000u to a leased ViP622, they sent me a return box also. I called to make sure they knew I owned my other receiver and was not returning (just deactivated on the account) and they verified that they were not actually expecting a return... but told me that it is an automatic thing that a return box gets sent out even if they don't want a receiver returned in an upgrade scenario.

Do not return any receiver that you own. Dish will only give you $10.00 no matter which model it is. Also, if you sell a 942 to someone let them know that Dish will only activate it as a 625.

Not exactly true. A 942 can only be a 942, they cannot "activate it as a 625" when it is a 942.

What they will no longer do is activate any HD programming on it, since HD programming is migrating to MPEG-4. A 942 will still get HD programming OTA (without being charged for an "HD Enabling fee"), as well as any HD programming that is still MPEG-2 (as long as there is another MPEG-4 receiver as the primary on the account and HD programming is subscribed on the account).
