does directv just base your programming on your zipcode or do they detect the location of your dish or something like that? It seems like all they can do is enable your box to receive programming for the region of your zipcode.

if not, suppose someone who lives in Baltimore, but gives them a NYC zipcode....will they get NYC programming (local networks and regional sports) on their box in Baltimore?

I don't even have directv, I'm just curious about their technology and the rules which apply to local network broadcasts. Does directv have any way to determine your location other than the zipcode you give them? (there is no phone line connected or in the house at all)

They do it by your billing address, but many give addresses that are in other markets. Now much of the country is on spot beams, which means you have to be fairly close (500 miles) of the DMA or you will not pick up the channels. (i.e. cannot get Miami locals in Texas).

I think they actually use a service address that you provide. Theoretially this isone of the reasdons they want a phone line attached. but I doubt they use it.
