I'd like to switch from Comcast to Directv for all the obvious reasons.

I am obsessed with getting as much HD as possible.

My wife wants to be able to access the local channels. We can't do this OTA because of some cliff called "View Ridge" (it really means blocks your view of the transmission towers).

The rest is much less important.

How is the Directv HD reception, and local stations via sattelite, in Seattle?

Great- you must have a clear view of the SE (134 degrees) and 32 degrees from the horizon.

Yup, geography in the Seattle area sucks for getting HD OTA. :)

I was so excited when D*TV finally got HD locals here last year. I immediately got two HR20's and haven't looked back since! I can't speak for anyone else, but I love the PQ. The only show that I can think of that I had a bit of a problem with last season was Friday Night Lights with all the super fast camera movements. It would cause some serious macroblocking, but it seemed to improve as the season went on. My guess is better encoding.

Other than that, HD Happiness abounds in this household!

The HD reception of Seattle locals is perfect. One thing to keep in mind is that only NBC, ABC, CBS and FOX are available in HD on DirecTV.

Good luck.

I am very happy with Directv's HD and local reception, just make sure you have that clear view to the SE and you are good to go.

Works great here, as long as you have clear line-of-site to the satellites.

View Ridge, as in NW Seattle proper around Carkeek?

Regardless, works great here (not far from Carkeek), but as noted, you need a clear view of the southern sky.

The only significant thing you won't get via DirecTV is any HD from PBS (the channel 9 sub-channels), or the channel 5 or 7 sub-channel, without OTA.

There is also some HD on KSTW and KMYQ which isn't carried by Directv. Maybe they (and KCTS) will be added when Directv 11 is up, if not sooner. HD quality of the currently carried locals is excellent.
