View Full Version : Did you get a New or Refurbished HR20?
My first one was new and sealed in an "official" HR20-700 box. The second one I got, which I got for only shipping, is refurbished and came in an old R15 box (sticker on box had all HR20 information). It's not big deal because it looks and works fine, but I sure would have preferred new. Didn't expect to get a refurbished unit so soon, but I guess they are out there. I suppose since I don't own it, if it ever goes bad it will be a free swap anyway.
Just curious how many of you are getting new vs. refurbs?

I got my HR20-700 shortly after they were released to the public. It was new then... now it's 1 year old. :)

First one was brand spanking new, same for the second until i had the high pitched whine coming from it at all hours of the night, then got a hr20_100 ( ??) refurb, and had to return THAT for a hr20-700 ( YAY!!) BTW it was refurbished- but still now i can't WAIT for the weekend to get it set like my first ( VOD )

About 6 weeks ago I upgraded to HD. The first HR20 they gave me was a refurbished HR20-100S. It had bad tuners (searching for signal problems) and kept freezing on the live feed. A few days ago they swapped that one out for another refurbished HR20-100S.
When I voiced concern about getting a used HR20 to the D* tech support guy he said that they last forever. I said that the hard drives will eventually wear out and that I was surprised that D* didn't tell me that I was getting a used unit, which might cost me service calls in the future. He said that he never heard about a hard drive wearing out. I said that I didn't like the idea of getting a refurbished unit as my first HR20, and that I could be getting someone else's problems. He said that they are repaired and checked out before they go out. I wonder what percentage of refurbished units go back out with problems that weren't detected during repair? My "new" HR20 is acting up. I've had it for 3 days. It's not getting all the channels. Some are "searching for signal", some are "channel not purchased". They are scheduling me for another service call, which he tried to charge me for. I'm not happy with these refurbished HR20's.
The first one I got in August was new when I upgraded, the replacement for the problem plagued new one is refurbished. Both HR20-100... I was hoping for 700. The case on the 'refurbished' unit is not even on correctly. Somehow I suspect more problems to come. If this replacement one is FUBAR too maybe I'll get a free 2nd unit without an upgrade fee.
My first was a HR20-700 and so was the second. I actually kind of wanted the second one to be a HR20-100 in black so that I had one of each. They are both working very well (knock on wood). Oddly enough, the refurbished one runs a few degrees cooler than the new one and the refurb is upstairs where it is wamer than in our finished basement.

I doubt the problem is in the reciever if it occured on both units in the same location. Although there is no reason to charge for a service call since there is a 90 day warranty period on the install and a 1 yr warranty on the hr20.

I got a brand new HR20-100. 3 Months ago.
My first HR20 was a new -100.
My second was a new -100 as well.
My first HR20 died after 4 months and they sent out a refurbished -700 to replace it. While I was on the phone about the dead unit, the CSR told me I was eligible for a free HR20 to replace my last TiVo. They sent out a refurbished -700.
The replacement -700 died after 4 days. I used the second -700 in place of the dead -700. They sent out another refurbished -100 to replace the replacement.
The second -700 is flaky and won't always turn on without several reboots. I am holding the refurbed -100 in case this one dies before a tech can come out and check things out.
My confidence in the refurb department at D* is running a bit low at the moment.
