According to reports, the Federal Communications Commission has delayed the auction for Multichannel Video Distribution and Data Service (MVDDS), the controversial terrestrial wireless offering that aims to share satellite TV spectrum.
The auction was scheduled to begin Feb. 12, 2003. However, the FCC said the auction will now commence on Aug. 6, 2003.
MVDDS will allow wireless operators to operate in the spectrum band used by DBS services. Satellite TV interests have been fighting the proposed service, worried that it will interfere with their signals.
Several petitions for reconsideration of the FCC order - which sets operating rules for MVDDS - are before the commission. In addition, the Satellite Broadcasting and Communications Association and DBS operators filed a petition for review in the DC Circuit Court, challenging the FCC decision to authorize MVDDS in DBS spectrum.
