View Full Version : Not impressed by new HD channels

I am not impressed by the 21 supposedly HD channels..The only one giving good HD performance or that has anything that has not been recycled 50 times is the Smithsonian channel and that is giving audio dropouts about every 2 minutes with some pixelation..Most others like the movie channel, CNN, Science ect. are not even showing anything in HD or just showing cropped versions of SD..Most of stuff on the history channel was HD lite. And do we really need the weather channel in HD. and even that is not in HD most of the time.

Its time to stop all of the Hype and get with reality.

Huh? OK. I'm not having any problems with reception.

Sure some stuff is upconverted SD, but that's the fault of the channel. They'll be creating new stuff in HD, but they have to fill the time somehow.

Hard to blame D* for the lack of HD content. All they can do is pass along what is provided to them.

I like the 8 or so additional movie channels in HD. Much better than only having two pay movie channels in HD. I think HD and the movies are perfect for each other, and having these new channels is, to me, the biggest benefit of the new channel selection.

I don't know what your problem is, Jason except for maybe you just like attention or like to stir things up.

I really enjoyed your post from Tuesday "Its all a hoax..D10 did not attain orbit and is now lost in space..All the stuff you are seeing is from the old satellite...The Russians are launching or have already launched a new satellite but it will be months before you get anything...In the meantime the will be delays and more delays with fake signals." And this beauty from a week ago also...
"I thought I would start this early for the "POSSIBLE" new HD channels that may be coming next week. I predict that the following will occur:

1. Pixelation and audio dropouts

2. HD channels that look like SD

3. Channels which don't show up on the guide

4. CSR' and Installers which don't have a clue about any of this.

5. Billing problems and people not getting the channel they are suppose to

And lots of new problems too come"

I was watching some movie on Stars last night (I can't even remember the name) that was a lame movie, but I was mesmorized by how good it looked in HD. Sure, there isn't enough content for 24 hour HD on a lot of the new channels at this time, but at least we can see what HD movies are shown in their full glory and more content will be HD soon.

I have been paying for the premium package for a year now. I have found that it has been worth that price for 2 days now. I only watched 2 of the 40-50 movie channels before. I now can watch with pleasure, many more. I am like a giddy school girl bouncing from channel to channel watching the pretty pictures.

Welcome to the current state of HD as it is now.

In several years the situation will reversed and Upconverted content will be the exception.

It doesn't have to be 16:9 to be HD.

Even upconverted content will look better over the HD channel than the SD channel.

I completely missed that this thread was started by jason williams. Had I noticed, I would have moved on. It definitely seems like his modus operandi is to make an inflammtory post and watch everyone's reaction. I try not to give him the staisfaction. He won this round....

We've come a looooong way.

Remember when you watched, and re-watched, and re-watched, and re-watched, and ... the Purdue football game, the bees gathering nectar from the flowers, the garden scenes all on PBS because that was the only HD picture available? And, oh yea, don't forget Bruce Springsteen!

This is what I've paid many thousands of $ like many other folks to watch ... HD (even though some of it may be upscaled or "HD-Lite" - still far better than SD).

Anyone know when the Purdue game is re-scheduled for showing :) :)

Don't forget that not every HD show shows up as HD in the guide. I've seen at least 2 HD movies that were not marked as such.

This guy is BS. All channels got great picture quality. Some don't have DD 5.1 but I haven't got any audio drop out or pixelation on any of these new channels. The only thing I don't like is the stretch-o-picture which is not D*'s fault. It is the stupid provider. Stop posting BS stuff, go back and watch your Dish and comcrap channels. You don't have D*.

We are loving our "fake" signals.

They are great! We could not be happier.

Let me predict your reply:

What has all these posts got to do with my original post about HD channels coming and going...ARE YOU ALL A BUNCH OF IDIOTS OR WHAT...

Just like Jason's D10 is a Hoax Thread, (http://www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?p=1158353#post1158353) could someone close this thread?

Fair warning...

no reason to bash other members. Let's respect each other, and if you don't like the way the thread is going, don't read it.

Personally to answer the OP, I'm impressed with the quality and sure there are reruns but that's just the way it is with advertiser-supported, non-broadcast content providers (we used to call 'em "basic cable") in September when the focus is on the networks.

To answer my friend Milominderbinder2... if this thread keeps on heading toward a "bash-fest", it will be closed.

It sounds like you believed the hype about this being the "Year of the HD"!

I feel suckered too but this at least is a start in the right Direction. In fact 2008 actually might be the year of the HD. Meanwhile I'm out over $1,500 to Directv for promises not kept.

Unfortunately you must either accept this situation and give up your anger or your going to be mad every time you turn on the TV. I chose acceptance.

I am not impressed by your post. Every two words you start to pixelate. Your posts never have any new content, just the same old tripe that you've recycled 50 times. Do we really need to listen to your made up silliness about HD? And even that is not coherent most of the time.

It's time to stop all the trolling and get with reality.

I forget who reminded me of this, the other day - but, remember one of the better practices aided by the forum software. You can go to User CP and instruct the system to ignore specific trolls.

It actually makes reading this thread funnier than you'd expect - not having to read the OP jive.

Smithsonian HD Has been rock solid here not any audio or video problems. and anyway what did you think HD versions of those channels would be it's all "recycled" content, That's what happens when we get to 250+ video broadcasts.

Edit.....Ignore, I didn't realize I was feeding the Troll.....

Why? To apologize when constant HD content starts rolling in? You weren't an early adopter of HD, like I was, were you? You should have seen what the "Big 3" were trying to pass off as HD. I think you would've had a stroke.

Jason, unfortunately in each post I've read from you it was dripping with negativity. I think if there was an announcement about a doctor finding a cure for cancer, you would say, "yeah, but he didn't find it yesterday." This is a site to learn things, help each other, and post issues and solutions, not to just and crap on something whenever you get the opportunity.

I add to fellow Moderator Stuart's comments. Please do not request closure within a thread. Use the report post button to report a post or thread to the moderators instead. Much more likely to get our attention and leaves the thread more professional looking.

Also, please don't call people trolls, as insulting members will get you in trouble, not the person about whom you speak. The best advice is if you sense a troll at work, ignore it. the thread will die, but only if you stop feeding the thread, bumping it to the top.

Thanks,
Tom
