Under Directv's website under "change programming", I just noticed a new option in the "services" tab. There is now an option for "DIRECTV HD EXTRA PACK - $0.00/3 Months Free. Get even more HD channels with the DIRECTV HD EXTRA PACK. Requires HD Access ($9.99/mo.) and at least one HD receiver or HD DVR."

Clicking the info link reveals this is the add-on pack for $4.99/mo, that has been talked about quite a bit on this forum.

By default, the box is unchecked. I'm wondering what would happen if I checked it. It is free for 3 months, but I'm pretty sure I'm receiving everything I should be anyway right now. This actually isn't a whole lot extra since I only have the Family Pack + grandfathered HD Pack. The only new channel I received yesterday was SmithsonianHD. Even ScienceHD and WeatherHD were "channel not subscribed - 721" even though the SD versions are part of the Family Pack.

No big deal, but I'm wondering what is the benefit of checking this box. I'm afraid to do so, as I do not wish to tamper with my grandfathered status, if there's a chance it will be construed as such.

You may want to have customer service enable your HDs by hand. If you are getting Smithsonian, then you are getting one of the HD Extra channels, so no reason to sub to that unless you want HDNet or something.

On a separate thread I noted that I had called a CSR and asked them to switch me from the legacy HD Pack to HD Access, in an attempt to receive ScienceHD and WeatherHD, which I should receive as part of the Family Pack. Although that worked, I lost ESPNHD, ESPN2HD and TNTHD in the process.

Therefore, it seemed as if Family Pack subscribers were being given a choice of either continuing to receive the original seven HD channels (including the aforementioned ESPNHD, ESPN2HD and TNTHD) via legacy HD Pack, or switch to HD Access and lose those three channels and gain ScienceHD and WeatherHD. SmithsonianHD was coming in either way.

I opted to keep the legacy HD Pack for now, but seeing that new option on the Directv website made me curious as to what exactly does checking it does, as I seem to already get whatever one would think I was authorized to receive.

Was it ever determined who has to pay for the HD Extra Pack and who doesn't? I got totally lost on this subject
