View Full Version : Native on problems
I recently but a scalar and now have Native on. This appeared to cause problems. When I change channels and especially when the channel changes resolutions, wild gyrations (blue screens, black screens, relays etc) occur before things settle down. THat I assume I need to live with. On top of that, during the black screens on commercials short loss of signal appears to occur (now accompanied by a blue screen). Is this normal? Do I have to go back to a fixed output?
Thanks

Perhaps it is the type of TV that is in use.
Post your equipment and someone may be able to give you some more details on what may work best for what you have.
I have an 40" Sony 2 ton high def tube and it works great with native on and does not have the green/grey/black color changing issue. I am also using a hdmi to DVI conversion.
I'm running the HR-20 into a Samsung 53" using a HDMI connection and I'm receiving all the new HD channels fine. I'm finding that with the DVR set for resolutions of 420p, 720p and 1080i as well as set to native that when I tune to a 1080i channel, the TV screen goes dark, the resolution lights on the front of the DVR will go to 1080i, then go for a second to 720p, then back to 1080i. At that point, the TV screen comes up with a green background streaked with moving lines of white. If I turn the DVR off and then back on, the same channel displays properly. If I turn native off, everything is fine picture wise as I go through the HD channels. With native off, the resolution light on the front of the DVR shows as 420p. Also, if I use Function on the remote to change resolutions, the screen display is fine as I scroll through the different resolutions.
A few questions:
- Any idea/s on what is causing the green screen problem?
- Why is it that to my eye the picture quality on a HD channel appears the same regardless of whether I have native on or off?
Many thanks.

I believe what you are seeing is caused by your TV having to switch resolutions to support the output of your DTV box.
Try this setup on your DTV box:
NATIVE ON
Remove all resolution choices except 1080i
Depending on your TV, this may give you the best picture quality and solve your issues. If your TV is a 1080i or 1080p, with these settings on your DTV box, your TV no longer has to switch resolutions - it's always getting the same resolution from your DTV box.

turning off native is the same thing as deselecting all resolutions but one, Right?
Turning off native defeats the purpose of the scalar (at least automatically). To answer an earlier question, I use component to a Toshiba 56H80 (for now). From the answers it does appear that native on is still not working very well.
Thanks for the suggestion to uncheck all resolutions with exception of 1080i. This appears to have solved the green screen problem.
