why do some of you believe its better to leave the reciever on all the time? I loke to turn mine off as it is off more than on. also if I add a esata drive, how does this change mine liking of turning the receiver off?

The receiver is never really 'off', it goes into standby mode so it can still record anything scheduled. In the 'olden' days when I worked as a tech, the worst thing you could do to hardware was turn it on and off repeatedly, most failures happen this way. Whetehr newer techonology has changed that or not I don't know. But if you turn off your esata obviously nothing will be recorded.

will the esata "turn off" if I put the reciever in stand by mode?

I doubt it, but only way to find out is to try it. S/B some led indicators or something on the esata that will show if its on or off. I would imagine D* Would leave the esata port live in standby mode, but its not officailly supported yet, so hard to know whehre it stands. Just give it a shot. Can't hoit.

My scheduled records still record in standby and use the eSata to record them to my 750. It couldn't do that if the eSata was off in standby since once eSata is connected to a drive the receiver can't use the internal drive.

yes thinking further, the drive certainly would not power off since its plugged into the AC outlet and powered by its own transformer that came with the drive So putting the HR20 in standby mode probably will not affect recording, unless it kills the data port, which I highly doubt. Ithink about all sb mode does is turn of the front panenl LEDs and probbly the op panel switches on front too.

There is no difference between "on" and standby except:
-slight temperature difference (<2 degrees)
-no video/audio output
-no lights on front panel.
You will not hurt your receiver at all by putting it in standby nor will you help it at all.

same for the esata drive hooked to it?(leaving esata on and but putting receiver in and out of standby)

same for the esata drive hooked to it?(leaving esata on and but putting receiver in and out of standby)You must leave the eSATA drive on at all times. The HR-20 uses it continuously whether on or in standby.

In the old TiVo days, there was mixed opinion on whether or not putting the unit in standby would stop the liveTV buffering, thereby eliminating unnecessary hard drive activity... Not sure how this is with the HR20, but thought I'd bring it up...
