I know it is possible because I had it working like this for several months but a power outage screwed up all the settings. I have tried the red button reset, repeat satellite setup and even unplugged it for about a day all to no avail. I am very leery of menu resets since the last time I did that I lost all my recorded shows and I cannot have that happen again or the wife will kill me. Does anyone have any advice?

The menu reset is to be nicer to the hard drive and as such is the preferred reset.
With only one cable connected to wither SAT 1 or 2, the HR-20 should auto detect one SAT feed as it reboots.
What do you have connected?

If I understand your question, unhook one cable and reboot. That's the only way.

I've never had to do anything "special" to tell the HR20 "use single tuner mode". I just put one satellite cable into Sat. 1 and away it goes.

Cheers,
Tom

+1. I've forgotten more times than I can remember.;) that the HR20 autodetects 1 tuner.

I asked VOS last Friday during the CE...."menu reset" did exactly what I needed.

Never lost recordings using this method

"Help/Setup" - "Settings" - "Reset" - "Receiver" - "dash" to confirm.

Thanks, I will try that when I get home. I have always had just one sat line in the house going into sat 1 but have problems with this issue every time there is a power outage. And I am a Mike R too what are the odds :D

I have an HR20-100 and when I go to reset in the settings menu I have
Restart Recorder
Reset Defaults
Reset Everything

Does anyone know if Reset Defaults would be similar to reset receiver?

If you have power outages often, I'd get a UPS to get you through the outages, and avoid the pain every time.

I'm having the same problem. I was having problems with tuner 2 getting a 771 so I was going to try just using tuner 1. However I still got a 771 on tuner 2 after I reset so I went to check the signal levels and on sat 101 on transponder 32 I get a 89% signal reading from tuner 2 with no coaxial attached. It goes away when I remove the coax from tuner 1, when I connect the same coax to tuner 2 it reads the same as tuner 1 which is 100%. Does it sound like I have a bad 2nd tuner on my HR20?
