View Full Version : line splitting

I just moved into a new house and the previous owner already had the HD dish installed complete with the zinwell splitter. Here's the curious thing... all 8 output lines are run to different rooms - or in some cases different walls in the same room.

I saw the house before he moved everything out and he definitely had the HR-20 hooked up (though I can't verify that he had both tuners connected). I didn't notice any other D** boxes in the house.

The question is; Do I have to run new wires for the areas that I want to use my dual tuners, or is there a way I can split the existing line - even though it has already been split at the zinwell?

If I've said anything confusing, please let me know and I'll try to explain better. It's nearly midnight and after a day of unpacking, I'm not thinking straight. To make it worse, I couldn't get to sleep until I posted this question. Thanks for the help.

There is no way to split an existing line. Each cable needs its own connection back to your multiswitch.

Later this year, however, DirecTV should begin shipping a new "Single Wire Multiswitch" that can feed both tuners using one coax cable. Do a search here on "SWM".

Thanks litzdog. I've been moving for a while and missed the discussions on SWM's. Since I don't feel like going with 1 channel for an undetermined amount of time, I will just run a new wire. It's not THAT big of a deal, just another thing to add to my Honey-Do list.

Run another for OTA while you are there.

Call DIRECTV. As a new mover, they may do a lot of this for free.

dont forget the quick and dirty .... from another leg .. run a piece of RG-6 from room to room for the dual .. duct tape works well to hold it down so the wife wont complain tooooo much

Fortunately it is a newer house and was pre-wired for cable. I just ran my new wires down the same hole for the cable, put a dual face plate, and stuffed the cable line back into the wall. Not too hard... though I am getting a notice that my signal on the 99(b) satellite failed :(

Might actually have to call about that one.
