View Full Version : Leave HR20 always on?
Just got my HR20 installed (more on that later). I'm reprogramming my remote (Logitech) and for my H20 I had it turn off when not in use or watching a DVD, etc. For a DVR, do I always need to leave it on? If I'm recording something manually will it stay on even if a "power off" sequence is sent to it? If I have something programmed to record, does the DVR "wake up" and stay on as long as it's recording?

The HR20 is actually never off as long as it's plugged into power. Turning it "off" really only puts it in to standby. Recording of programs still takes place when in standby. Putting it into standby is beneficial because the HR20 then knows that you are not currently using it and it can focus more on background tasks like updating the program guide and scheduling recordings.

Power off really just turns off the lights on the front. It's still on and will record if it needs to.
I knew I came to the right place for the proper answer! Thanks for the incredibly fast response.

Even when it's in standby, it will stay pretty warm and you'll hear the drive still going.
New to this forum, long time poster on other forums. I did not see anything similiar in my search....
I just got a HR20-700 HD DVR installed and the installer programmed the DVR remote to turn the TV and DVR on and off at the same time via the DVR remote. Cool. Save on the hard drive and buffer....
But after its turned off, when I use the DVR remote on/off button, the TV goes on buit I get no signal on my TV from the DVR. Just a blue screen.
I have to restart the DVR and then I get a signal.
What would cause this, and what can I do about it?
I would rather get a response here than wait for 15 minutes on hold byu calling directv. :D
ps I also have a Harmony remote, but sometimes we just want to watch television with the TV speakers instead of firing everything else up. I have not tried using this remote with "activity" buttons yet.

The red/yellow record light on the front of the box will stay on when you shut it off.

Sounds like more of a TV issue. Its having a hard time getting the signal I take it ur using HDMI? Do you have the same problem with componet...highly unlikely. Some Tv's have a hard time with the HDMI signal once turned off.

Just decide if you want the blue lights on. In my living room I don't mind them. It's a little safer in the middle of the night.:) However, the blue lights are too much for the bedroom unit so we put that one standby. I know you can turn them off at the panel as well.

Okay, I will check that route. Does the HR20-700 output both HDMi and Comp at the same time?

Yes - all outputs are active at the same time! :D

Definitely try component. Also you can get a learning remote, even an inexpensive one, and set the power button to control the TV only.

I did forget to mention that I had cycled thru the inputs and that did not help. Weird.
I used to have my older HD Tivo (direcTv) running to my TV via components, and when I swapped it for HDMI, Ithought the picture quality was noticeably better. Plus, if I run the HDMI I am able to get sound directly to the TV. If I use the comps, I would not be able to get audio to the TV because it is about 25 feet away.
Regarding the universal remote, I did mention I have a Harmony. I do prefer using that, but it is set up so that when I click the activity "watch TV" everything fires up, including my preamp and power amp. I was hoping to have this "option" of just watching TV using the sound from the TV speakers so that it can be watched without firing up the amp (which is how my wife prefers to do it).
