View Full Version : Can anyone recommend the Hughes Director Pack Receiver?
I am a Dish Network Subscriber and I am thinking about changing to DirecTV and I know a lot about the receivers and the switches that Dish has but nothing about DirecTv's receivers or the switches. but I was looking at a receiver that was called the Hughes director receiver and I was wondering if this is a good one to start out with? and I saw on the forum where there is a receiver that is APG & MPG could someone tell me what this means? and I will need the larger dish to get my locals from knoxville tn. and I see where some of the dishes or 18x24 and some are 18x20 which is the best? and it is not that important but I was told that the Hughes receivers has the Channel Logo on them is this true? if so how many channel logo's are there?any info will be appreciated. I can not recommend Hughes to any one untill I see a Hallmark logo,TechTV logo and others on the guide.@ least Thomson/RCA upgraded its guide and included those logos with the last software patch for the drd rg boxes.

I have a standard Hughes receiver (Mitsubishi, but made by Hughes) and I like it very much. I don't give a poop about the logos though. I know the words HALL in the guide means Hallmark. If the logos are important to you, try Samsumg or RCA. Otherwise, I believe others like the Hughes receivers. There were some problems recently with the clock on the guide running slow, but I believe it has been fixed.
I can recommend them as long as they have an 'A' at the end. The 'A' signifies an advanced program guide (three days worth). That's the one I wish I got... but all in all, it still is an excellent recv (and I don't use a phone line so no caller ID)
Thanks HarryD,
where would the "A" belocated at on the receiver? after the item number or serial number?
... but all in all, it still is an excellent recv - its a good recv now that they got the bugs worked out. It only took a year of suffering with it, but it works fine now, never re-boots at all, wich means that the problems were software related or at Directvs end, not at the subscribers.
Taz,
When you are ordering, ask your dealer.. if you don't, you won't get one. I would think these GAEBO'A' s/b on the box. Go the extra mile..
Don't get me wrong, the GAEBO is great too, but I like the ability to go ahead in the EPG. You can do this with the GAEBO but you have to wait for the guide info to download from the sat (usually a couple of minutes)

I don't give a poop about the logos though. I know the words HALL in the guide means Hallmark. If the logos are important to you, try Samsumg or RCA... --Logos and symbols have an important place in human civilization. People feel secure in seeing the symbol of the product or station they are using. AT&T`s bell logo is a good example. The world would be a boring place with out them. We should do away with the american flag and just put a cloth up with printed letters USA on it. Or even Directv`s cyclone logo should be done away with and should just be block letters as well.Logos most certainly have a place on the EPG were they can aid in finding your favorite channel and admired as well, the same as when some of you might of been very young and got a kick out of seeing test patterns late at night. As far as....If the logos are important to you, try Samsumg or RCA.--- well Directv told me a year ago if logos were important to me I should use the Hughes, it seems like you need a new reciever every year with Directv to stay current, even though they have the capability to upgrade these guides, they dont.
