Can anyone advise how to combine D* with a cable modem and cable phone. I currently have a triple play type environment through a local cable company but am considering dropping the cable side of things to get D*.
I would imagine I would need to run new RG-6 cables for the D*?
What would I need to do or get done?

If you're going to drop cable TV in favor of D* but keep your Internet service through the cable company then you need to make sure that the lines for the D* receivers are separate from those used for your cable modem. You cannot mix those signals at all.
So yes, as you suspect new lines MAY have to be run. It really all depends on how your house is wired. If you do decide to get D* the installer that comes should be able to figure out which existing lines can be used and if new lines need to be run as well.

Thanks for the advice - that's what I thought, but wanted to just make sure

Depending on where the premises cabling connects to the apartment, you may be able to disconnect the feed from the cableco and connect in the feeds from the Satellite. Depends on how your place is setup.
Best way is to run the 4 cables from the sat in to a common area and then either couple them to the cables leading to your tv's or get a WB68 and attach through that.
I use the cableco for internet, Packet8 VoIP for phone and D* for TV. Best of all worlds and my entire bill for all 3 is only $200/month ($125 DirecTV, $50 TimeWarner, $25 Packet8)!

How do you do it Wisegoat - with a WB68? Are you only runnign RG-6?

If/when you do this, and the installer knocks on your door, make absolutely certain he understands that you are using a cable modem and that you will continue to be using a cable modem, and that he is NOT to re-use existing coax.
Otherwise, you have a very good chance of him leaving with your satellite working and your cable not working.
