View Full Version : Austin, TX NBC in HD?
I just moved to Austin, TX and noticed that I don't get NBC in HD through my D* receiver. I went to the local NBC station's website and they say I can receive their HD signal OTA, but I don't want to run a wire for OTA (or even set up and antenna). Does anyone have ideas or recommendations? Am I missing the channel somewhere?

you won't be able to find it. Apparently they couldn't come to terms for rebrodcast the signal.
quite frankly, I can't get the channel OTA, so I tend to just not watch NBC at all. Even if there's what could be a good show on NBC, I'd rather watch one of the other networks if they have anything watchable in HD.
I'll only watch NBC if there is absolutely nothing else on any other channel.

No, you're not missing anything. There's a long-term pi***ng match between D* and the owner, LIN TV. You may notice that you don't have KNVA/54 either. Since 54 us under an local marketing agreement with LIN , well, what goes for 36 goes for 54.
It's your basic mess.

The only way to get the HD is with an OTA. I have an antenna in my attic and manage to get 36 and 54 out here in Leander without any problem.
Real shame it has to be this way.
What a bummer. It's strange that ALL the other networks managed to find an agreement but this channel can't. Unfortunately, a lot of my favorite shows are on NBC (Heroes, My Name is Earl, The Office, etc.) and they even have Sunday night football now!
I've requested a waiver through D* so that I can receive the NBCE feed on channel 82. Supposedly only 1 in 5 waivers gets approved and it takes 45 days to get a response. In the meantime I'm going to start bugging 36 to get their act together.
Good luck! I've been trying that too - contacting both the local KXAN and the LIN TV guys to stress the importance of getting local HD coverage for NBC. My experience has not been good thus far in getting a response from either of them. I figure the more they hear it from their collective customers, the more urgency it will put behind getting a deal done.
One response I get from KXAN back in November was "Our parent company, LIN Television, strongly believes that subscriber fees paid to broadcasters by cable/sat providers are important to our long-term survival. Cable/sat providers currently pay those fees to all program providers except local broadcasters. LIN is committed to withholding authorization to carry the HD signals until agreements can be reached with these entities. ' When I asked again in April it was basically the same but they added "On the DirecTV agreement, we have a new person at the corporate level charged with moving this forward and I was able to speak to her directly last week. For the first time in a couple years I feel we have been able to communicate how important this is to us and our viewers and am optimistic that we can resolve it in a couple months.. I e-mailed this person a month ago and never got a response. I was hoping they'd surprise us all for the fall premiers but looks like the all might $ is still in charge.

My rabbit ears work for the most part out in Leander as well. 7 and 24 can be troublesome occasionally.

I'm a fairly new D* customer (came from TWC) and was pretty disappointed not to have NBC HD over the dish. Fortunately, I can get it OTA so it's not a huge deal, but I'd rather not have to rely on my antenna... even in Round Rock the reception can be finicky.
A little off topic, but since we have a captive audience...
Does D*'s Fox 7 HD feed look terrible for anyone else? Mine has all kinds of noise in it... looks like really bad compression artifacting. The OTA signal from Fox 7 is perfect, but the dish feed is almost unwatchable. The other HD locals over the dish look OK. I'm wondering if it's just me or if it's bad for everyone.
Regards,
Drew

You mean like in the picture attached? I e-mailed E* about it last week, they said they'd contact the broadcast center, no change. I e-mailed them about it yesterday got the reset your receiver (although I told them it did it on 4 different HD receivers), blah blah blah. I called in and the CSR told me it was a problem with the broadcaster, it's the signal they're receiving from KTBC even though I said the OTA was OK and last time I asked I was told D* receives their signal via OTA (their receive station on east Ben White by the airport in the Data Foundary data center). So anyone else having issues PLEASE call D* and let them know, maybe one day someone will actually believe there is a problem.

Yep, exactly like that. The screenshot doesn't do it justice. :) I'll be giving them a call to voice my concerns as well.
Thanks for the confirmation.
