would love some guidance, please.
my current setup is changing with the introduction of the HR20. i'm going to need 7 sat inputs. i believe i'm going to need (obviously) the new 5-LNB dish, a multiswitch (this is where i get fuzzy) and it feels like i will need something else.
suggestions are very welcome...especially for the multiswitch.
thank you.

With the new 5LNB dish, presuming you're saying you'll have a total of 7 tuners in various receivers that will need a cable run, you'll get a Zinwell WB68 multiswitch - which will take the 4 feeds from the dish, and allow a total of 8 outputs.

You need the Zinwell WB68. It has 8 outputs. D* will provide for free if upgrading dish and reciever. Make sure you tell the CSR to put it on the work order. Some install companies will not provide it if it is not on the work order.

Aside from the answers you've already received, you will need some big HDTVs. :)

As stated above, D* should upgrade you for free. They will also replace your cable with good RG6 solid core stuff. Can't trust old RG59 with the higher frequencies and higher current loading the new 5LNB demands, and the mounting pole.
If you are doing it yourself, you need the dish, WB68, and new coax. The 5LNB requires a larger pole, which, depending on the current dish mounting, replaces the one used for the 3LNB or you may need to do some fabricating. Braces (monopoles) are also recommended.... I think that's it.
Make sure that the new Slimline antenna is grounded properly by the technician.

All you are missing is this phone number:
1-800-DIRECTV
They will do everything for you free of charge. They use good cable and make good connections. Up to 125' x 4 should be included as well as the dish and the multiswitch. Free is good.

I've got two weeks to wait for my 5 LNB dish to get installed. The HR20 showed up today. Can I run through the setup with the existing dish and get programming? Not HD, but at least the rest of my package?

Yep, you sure can. On initial setup, go a head and select the 5 LNB option for the dish. :D

Will that work? Don't you need to select the 3-LNB setup, until you get the new dish?
If you select the 5-LNB setup with a 3-LNB dish will the IRD report there is a "problem" since it can't detect all of the LNBs?

Thanks for the welcome. Is a Panny 6UY 50" big enough? :) Had it for almost four years and actually watch most HD via a 1950s style antenna!
All of my coax is already RG6...been using RG6 since 1996 when I first entered the world of D*. I needed clarification on the new dish and the multiplexer.
I appreciate all the tips.

Well, I personally feel 50" TVs are nice for guest rooms and small kitchens. :)
Glad we could help with all the answers. Have fun!

He should really select 3-LNB and not the 5 until he actually has the 5 installed.
At which point, he will have to re-run setup.

Will that affect firmware updates? I think that his new receiver will have to receive updates for the 103b sat. I ran 2 HR20's, set to 5 LNB dish, on a triple LNB for 3 months with no operational issues. For future reference, what are the possible issues?

I use a 3LNB with my HR20 (using the 3LNB setup), and still get all of the updates.
I don't think the channel mapping/firmware for each sat is delivered via each separate bird. I'm sure it all comes down on one of the older "primary" birds. So, those who don't have 5LNB dishes will already have the latest version when they upgrade the dish.
I'll just rerun setup, after I install the 5LNB dish later.
Earl, do you know which sat(s) firmware updates come down?
