View Full Version : HD Tuning -- What's the Protocol?

Earl (or anybody else "in the know"):
Okay, I'm getting the new HD channels on my HR20-700 (the clue was an error message when tuning "202" -- installed the B-band converter, and voila!).
But I'm confused about how the tuning is supposed to work. I searched the threads, both here and in the Programming section, but could not find an answer. Here is what I have observed:
• If I tune directly, "by number", one of the new HD channels (say 202 for example), I get the HD version (CNNHD in this example).
• If I press "channel up", I get the SD version (CNN).
• If I then press "channel down", I get channel 201.
• If I select 202 from the Guide, I get the SD version.
So ... on the "face of it", it would appear there is no obvious method for scheduling recordings in HD (okay, I'll admit upfront, I have not tried it).
Have I missed something? Using the "dash" button, for example, as in terrestrial ATSC? Or is there "another shoe yet to drop" (enhanced tuning protocols and/or Guide options that distinguish HD from SD)?

You're most likely using a custom (favorites) list. Updating the list will allow you to correctly see both and schedule recordings for either version.

When I tune to 202, I get CNNHD as expected. Up one, 202(SD). Then down one, 202HD.
Likewise, in the guide, I can pick either one I choose. Either the HD or SD version.
Soon, you will be able to hide the SD duplicates as you wish.

You have not added the new HD channels to the favorites list you are using. The SD channels are still there so you will not be able to select the HD ones from the guide. Add the new channels to your favorites list and remove the SD duplicates and you'll be all set.

You are absolutely correct. That was the point that I missed -- I needed to switch back to the "All Channels" guide and/or update my "Custom 1" favorites list.
Discovered this myself with a little more poking around -- sorry I panicked!

Hi Tom..
This does not work for me..I can tune by scanning up/down, but not direct access from the remote..I have 2 H-20's..same on both..I heard that there was some sort of sw upgrade for this, the last upgrade I have is from 9/4...
Any, ideas?
Thanks!!

With the H20s, they are definately in need of a software update, as direct tune takes you to the SD channel.
This is not a problem with the HR20s.

We all panic now and again, no problem.
