Looking for some advice on getting a deal on a H20.

I already have talked to DTV and they have provided a HR20 for the cost of shipping and a 2 yr commitment. This has worked out very well for me.

I don't need another HD DVR, just a receiver that will receive the new MPEG4 broadcasting.

Am I stuck with paying full price for an H20 given I've signed up to a 2 yr commitment? Full price for an H20 is around $99 I think?

Thanks for any advice or direction you guys have.

By adding an H20 you will have to sign a new 2 year contract.

As far as getting a deal you will have to call and talk to a CSR to see what they will offer you.

Everyone seems to get different deals depending how long you contract still is if anything at all. How much you pay a month. How long you have been with them. Is your bill paid on time. What deals you have already got.

I just ordered one Saturday (Called D) and paid shipping and handling only (2 year commitment).

Something to think about, the H21s have been sighted in the wild. While they don't get OTA broadcasts, they do have a network port. It currently doesn't do anything but if multi-room viewing were implemented between a receiver and a DVR, you'd need a network port. Just something to think about.

I called for an H20 about two weeks ago and they gave it to me for $50. I saw on my bill that they charged me $20 for shipping, but I called CS and had that fee waived because the person that took my order led me to believe that the $50 I was paying included shipping.

$20.00 shipping is a bit ridiculous anyway.

:nono2: I just tried getting a Deal from direct to switch out one of my 2 remaining regular receivers for another H20 since I now added another HD TV in my bedroom, It was a no go...Oh well...I will just have to go to my local Circuit City and pick up one for 99.00, at least it will save me shipping...

Call again, my first CSR, wouldn't give anything. The second CSR, first started with 50 dollars off then came down, to just shipping.

:) Thanks, I tried again with a different Agent and she was actually from the US unlike the other agent and she gave me one for 44.00 plus free shipping so I will stick with that..... I could probably have gotten it for just shipping but her voice was so sexy I lost my composure.......

Some are still getting HR20's for $19. Even if you don't want to record a show, I bet you may want a replay or pause. And if you have the DVR features, you know you will end up recording programs just to make sure you have something good to watch. You are already paying the same DVR fee whether you add another DVR or not. Might as well get good use out of it.

The H20 they sent me for $50 was a refurbished model. Not a big deal though, it looks and works good as new.

 Do they still charge an additional 4.99 on top of the regular 4.99 charge for the DVR model or has that now changed.....

$5.99 DVR fee, once per account. S4.99 (lease fee or additional receiver fee) for each receiver after the first.

OK this is too bizarre not to post this here.

Yesterday the DirecTV installer came to the house to install the new H20 DTV sent me for $19.95 (shipping costs). I'm figuring this should be an easy install as I already have the HR20, Slimline dish and new switch installed and working wonderfully.

Well not the case. DTV must be selling the heck out of these new HD units (H & HR) because the installers they are using are fresh out of installer school and lack any real world experience. I say that because the installer they sent out to install my HR20 and Dish/switch a month ago was only 4 days on the job.

Anyways I digress, the installer sets up the H20 in place of the old Samsung HD receiver I had, goes through the setup wizard, sets up the remote to turn on my TV and declares the new H20 unit to be working perfectly and calls DTV to initialize the new card/receiver, without ever asking me if I accept the install or and this is the KEY POINT to check if the H20 is receiving the new HD channels.

Well as he is fooling around with the empty box I'm checking the program guide and the availability of the new HD channels and I discover they are not there. No TBSHD or A&EHD, etc..... The installer tells me the analog TBS and A&E is really HD and I tell him, no you are wrong it should have two entry's for each new HD channel. I walked him over to my other TV to show him the HR20 and how it worked and received the new HD channels and he was totally confused.

He then told me I had to call DTV and talk to tech support to fix my issues. I told him no, I don't accept his install and it’s his job to install the new equip correctly and ensure its receiving all of the new HD channels/programming. He then said nothing and began to disassemble the H20, put it n the box and leave the house…………. I asked him what he is doing and he said I didn’t want the H20 so he was taking it back and I told him no I want it but I want it installed correctly and I needed him to do what DTV had contracted him for. He said no he did what he was suppose to do and I didn’t want the unit so he would take it back.

I got all the info for the unit (card #, receiver s/n and rec ID#) before he packed it up in the box and took it away. I then called DTV and told them what had happened. They called the installation company with me on the line and we waited for 15 min before the installation company could get with the installer for my unit. They told DTV and I they were trying to figure out what happened and I should expect a call in 30min to set up a resolution for the H20. DTV also told me the unit is activated on my account (I did not approve this) and I needed to get the H20 back installed in my house. I told the DTV rep I never approved or signed off on the install of the H20 so how could it be activated to my account? This was becoming more strange the more we got into this. Oh and so far I never have gotten a call back as promised by the installation company.

SO I will call DTV again and try to get this resolved but I’m not looking forward to the upcoming call(s) and why am I, the customer, tasked with trying to resolve this installation issue with this installation company and DTV………………..Allegedly I’m paying for a unit I don’t have or ever approved being activated to my account and its up to me to get the unit back, installed or sent back to DTV if I’m not satisfied. This is to weird……………….

Oh and the installer never returned my old Samsung unit to its original setup, he left that up to me

OK good ending to this story.

DTV took care of me, totally zero'd out my previous H20 charges and gave me an HR20 for free, no shipping charges either and 6 months of free HD programming

Sent somebody who new what they were doing and got the HR20 installed and working, no problems.

Life is good........................
