directv doesn't really give very good deals to existing customers, only new customers... and mover's connection itself requires a 2 year contract extension otherwise they charge you $99 for that too. so put the two together and you're several hundred $ in the hole with a 2 year contract ...

I recently was in the same boat as you (moving, wanted HD) and spent a good number of hours trying to get a deal that came close to what a new customer would get... only to find that all signs seemed to point back to having to call directv retentions and threatening to cancel. (though i was actually very serious, comcast was far, far, far cheaper for comparable startup).

so your best bet is probably to call directv customer retentions and threaten to cancel to see if you can get a deal similar to what a new customer would get... lookup what new customer deals are on their web site first. demand what the new customer would get--you are after all signing a 2 year contract. they probably won't come close on the first try, but if you ask again or ask for a supervisor you might get it. or if not, hang up and call back. and if all else fails, cancel.

directv retentions = 800‑824‑9081, though they ask for a PIN now so you don't really get them without talking to a CSR first... I think when you don't enter the PIN it just redirects you to the general directv line now, so maybe talk to a CSR and ask for retentions or a retentions PIN? ...there seems to be conflicting info on how to handle getting retentions since they've gone to the PIN...

after a good 5 or 6 hours of haggling you'll probably end up with a $300 up front startup/moving cost balanced by several months of various service credits that will confuse you and directv for a good 6 months and hopefully everything works out as they promise.

good luck!

Mover's connection prices will be based on your payment history with the company.. but are usually free. Upgradeing to HD will just be the standard price of the reciever you want. HR20's run $299 for a leased receiver and they will install it/upgrade your dish free. From what I've heard mover's connection installs are usually 2ish weeks out from the time you call in, so make sure to plan ahead!

And about new customer offers... realize that DirecTV offers EVERYONE a new customer offer when they initially sign up. It's not like they're punishing current customers, as all current customers were at one time offered a new customer discount as well. A business can't constantly give free equipment, programming, etc... just because a customer is still a customer. They would never make any money. If you have a good history with a company and haven't already recieved alot of free in the past, I'm sure they'll be more than willing to help out.

All good info, in the long run, it will probably be in the neighborhood of free movers connection, and $199 to lease the HR20, a very typical deal. If you feel you deserve special treatment, then you can wait it out and play CSR roulette, but be prepared that the above might be the best you get offered based on your past history with them.

Call D* and tell them that you are moving and want to cancel your service. The CSR may try to retain you or pass you straight over to retention. Explain that you have been happy with D* service but that "xyz" cable company is offering free startup and free DVR's and is just to good of a deal to pass up. When they make you a offer say, "I would do that if not for the cost." With persistence you may be able to get to the 99.00 total cost point (or below) for dish, cable, multiswitch (if needed), and HR20.

i did a movers connection in August. it was free, but i had to agree to a two year extension on the contract. not a big deal since i am pretty happy with D*. I also got a free H20 upgrade out of it. A month later, I decide I wanted the HR20, so last week I called D*, said "Cancel" at the prompt, and was put through to rentention. I asked how long my contract was for, and she said it was for another 2 years (Aug 09). I asked her about the HR20, and first she said it was 299. I then asked her for the 19.99 deal and she said she could do 100 off. Then I asked again (nicely) and she agreed to it.

so basically, what i'm saying is you should be able to do the same thing (or just go directly to the hr20 at the time of the move). but yes, you will have to extend your contract. if that's a huge deal to you, then perhaps you should move onto cable anyway.

Not moving to cable, not an option - cable does not give me access to the channels I want. As such, extending my contract for another two years is not a big deal at all...
