I have what I think is a simple question.

I have a WB68 Zinwell multiswitch. At present, I have four inputs from the dish and all 8 outputs.

If for whatever reason I only had two inputs to the multiswitch, could this still "create" the 8 outputs?

Just curious if the number of outputs is tied to the number of inputs. Could I have 8 outputs with 1 input?

You have to have all 4 inputs from the dish to the multi-switch for it to work. It does not matter how many outputs.

For the WB68 to work properly you need all 4 cables to the switch from the dish.

Hmmmmm..... is there an HD compatible multiswitch that will work with only 2 inputs?

No.

Eight outputs with one input? sure.
You would have half of the channels from one or more of the five SAT locations, depending on which one you used.

What you need is the WB616 it has 16 outputs from 4 inputs. If that is what you are trying to do.

What are you trying to do?
If you need more than eight outputs, there is a WB616 with 16 outputs or you can split the four inputs to two WB68 switches.

Yes, it can be done. However many LNB's you attach to the multiswitch inputs; 1, 2, 3, or 4; will be available at all 8 outputs. Of course, only the sats associated with whichever LNB's are attached will be available.

Sorry for being vague in the first place. I am not actually trying to do anything, it is for a buddy.

He has four wires coming off the dish. Two go around the house to his basement setup. The other two go into his utility room. From the two coming into his utility room he wants to feed multiple receivers throughout the house.

Did not know if this was possible.

The obvious workaround is all four wires come into his utility room, into the multiswitch. Then 2 of the outputs simply go back out and "around" to his basement setup and the other 6 can be disbursed throughout the house.

"workaround" may not be the correct wording. It's the only way, even with the soon coming out, single wire multi-switch.
There are three blocks of frequencies coming down each of the four coax to the switch.
Without the multi-switch the receiver will select these, but the switch needs to have access to all of them to then distribute them to each receiver.

Agreed. Bad choice of words on my part. Thanks for the info.

If your friend now is using more than the two inital receivers, just call DIRECTV and have them install the cable and the new receivers. It should be free.

1-800-DIRECTV.
