Whats better for the optimal Blu-ray picture,PS3 or stand alone Blu-ray Disc player?

The PS3 is actually one of the best blu-ray players on the market. I have both a PS3 and a Samsung BD-P1400. I think the pictures for both are almost exactly the same.

I had the same question 2 months ago when I upgraded my tv. I ended up going with the PS3 and have no regrets. Not only do you get a great Blu-Ray player, but you also get to play PS1, PS2, and PS3 games, a media server, etc.

I also like the ps3 as a bluray player.. on the down side though, the ps3 doesnt upconvert standard dvd's. kind of a bummer..

Upgrade your System, PS3 actually up-converts SD DVDs and does a really good job of it.


The only real downside if you ask me is that it does not have an IR port. If you use a universal remote and want to control the PS3 you have to do a workaround including a USB to PS2 controller adapter and a PS2 DVD controller with an IR adapter.

If you don't mind using a second controller, the Blue Tooth remote works really well.

I had a ps3 but returned it to buy a new TV. I just wanted to know if the next gen blu-ray players had a better picture than the PS3. I think I'll go with the PS3 since its basically the same price. Thanks for the info guys.

um.. ps3 doesnt upconvert sd dvd's. it just displays em with a progressive scan.. call sony, they'll verify.

I bought a PS3 2 weeks ago. You also get an unbelievable DVD player. With my old player I would always get moments of pixelization. Not with the PS3. DVD's are unbelievably smooth.

You do need internet access to get the latest system update. At the moment I think the 60GB is the best one to get. The game play of PS1 & PS2 games is due to hardware compatability in the 60GB model. The 80GB Is via software emulation which is iffy. 20GB & 40GB models have stuff missing. Like on board wireless, card reader. Just check before you get it. And if possible get the 60GB unit. Sony quit making them. So when the sotres sell out that is it. I thought I would be able towait until spring and get t cheaper. But after considering that they (60GB model) are no longer being made, I took the plunge.

Yes, from what i understand the 60 gb version is the only one that has the Emotion engine from the ps2 included. The 80gb uses emulation software, and the 40 gb does neither. The old 20 gb version may also have the emotion engine, i am not sure on that one.

Both the original 20gb and 60gb had the Emotion Engine. The Europe version was the first to remove the chip.
