View Full Version : slimline dish.... type of metal?

I have what will probably seem like a ridiculous question........Is the slimline dish(and all other dishes, for that matter) made of galvanized metal? Reason I ask is I ended up getting my dish swapped out yesterday from the side car style to the slimline, because of a bad lnb. Worked out good for me.......no charge either. Anyway, I went up and double checked after the guy left, and of course, found the bolts for the tilt adjustment loose, and noticed a few really good scrapes in the dish, down to the metal. No big deal, as long as it doesn't start rusting, because it will start looking shabby if that happens. We got rain last night, and usually surface rust will appear quick, and there is none, so it makes me think that under the gray paint is galvanized metal. Just curious. Anyone think I'm being ridiculous worrying about my dish rusting?:D

The 3LNB dishes were galvanized metal. Pretty sure they all are. Installed quite a few dishes and I've never seen one rust yet. I do live in AZ though, so its not like there is much moisture here for me to say for sure.

My 3LNB was definitely plastic (it has molded reinforcement ribs on the back), but my Slimline is some type of steel because a magnet will stick to it. If it is scratched down to the bare metal, I would expect it to rust.

Plastic? Not likely, unless you mean it is metal-coated plastic, or platic-coated metal.

Plastic will not reflect the satellite signals to the LNBs.

Well unless Channel Master is injection molding metal, this one is definitely plastic or fiberglass.

Wow! You got out at 8Am to take that pic. I'm impressed.

I don't know about this particular dish, but the fiberglass dishes I have seen have wire mesh embedded in them.

My olde fashioned 3LNB dish with 3 seperate LNB's was definitely fiberglass.

A lot of them were this way, fiberglass impregnated with metal shavings so as to be reflective to RF signals. You had to be careful not to over-torque the bolts that held it to the mount or the bolt heads would pull right through the fiberglass.

When I moved after Katrina I got a replacement dish, a "Phase III". It was made of galvanized steel.

My slimline also appears to be galvanized steel.

I agree that the 3LNB was fiberglass with some metal in it... It shredded like fiberglass when I destroyed it.

The original Channel Master Phase I three separate lnb dish, with the Channel Master 2x4 multiswitch screwed on the back was indeed a composite fiberglass material containing an aluminum powder.

O.k. so most of you think it's galvanized??? Calling D and telling them to send me a dish that isn't scratched is ridiculous, right?

Yes, especially since you can paint it as long as you don't use a lead-based paint (which I don't believe are being made any longer).

You'll have better luck of hitting the lotto than getting a dish that doesn't have a scratch somewhere on it.

A wire mesh with openings less than 1/4 wavelength of the expected frequency will act like a solid metal surface to the incoming signal. Fiberglass would be a good material to bond everything together.

Check out the dishes used on the cell phone towers!

And did we take particular joy in destroying said dish? :)

Unless you know some toymakers from China...then you can buy all kinds of lead paint I would think. :D
