I am newbie here from cable...I am thinking of going to Directv but will have to fight the apartment complex and get the FCC involved to let me put a dish on my patio (i signed lease addendum saying I wouldnt put up a dish) Before I fight this fight...I want to get opinions on how the reception is during the winter months...mainly from low ceiling clouds with snow.

Thanks

Really no different... be summer and winter.

Not too bad. I have a a couple of occurrences over the years where I would get a snow/ice build-up on the dish and need to clear it. But it's worth it. I would not let it deter you.

Good luck,

Jon

The only time I have trouble in the winter is when snow builds up on the dish and that is very rare and just takes a quick brushing.

Regarding the lease addendum, that is overridden by federal law (I dont have a link but look up OTARD) However you probably will still have a fight.

No problems in winter. I've had a blizzard with 3 feet of snow in a day and 60 mph winds and never lost a signal. Only time I have a signal issue is the freak ice storm that might coat the dish and LNB in thick ice. Supersoaker and warm water takes care of that problem every time.

Yeah, Its looking like I am going to have to fight this one with the landlord as he is going to argue the fact that I signed the lease addendum. I have inquired for a rule interpretation on my situation. If the FCC rules in my favor, I wonder if the landlord could kick me out for violating the lease agreement, even if the addendum is found to be invalid?

also in winter there are no leaves on the trees, so I believe in some situation the signal strength increses.

I think only a couple of times last year did I go out and clear the snow from the dish. if it is on the patio it should be easily accessable. I just brushed it off with my hand and the signal imediatly came back. so 2 time in the winter my sat was down for the 5 minutes it took me to go outside, as opposed to the hours cable used to be down when some one hit a pole. the cable supporters never mention that fact.

All the trees near my house still have leaves in winter, of course they are pine trees :D

When I had my dish on the roof winter could be a real problem when we would get big snows and the snow would literally bury the dish. It wasn't reachable to clear off w/o climbing on to the roof (not something you want to do when there is snow on the roof). Ever since I moved the dish, I just wipe off the snow build up.

worse in the summer for me only time snow stopped it was due to build up of snow on the dish. That has only happend 2 time in the 10-12 years of D.

It's great in Southern California :D but I doubt that will help you.

The only problem I had in Winter was an accumulation of wet snow on the dish, but that only happened once.

I've never had a problem with snow, ice, or cold weather. The reception has always been good.

Welcome to the forums, stormchas4! :welcome_s

The only problem I have with reception(s) in the winter is that it is bloody cold up here, so I hold them indoors. But the DIRECTV service is great. :)

Cheers and good luck,
Tom

Heavy rain seems to be more of a problem than snow. We had a 12" snowstorm last year and I didn't lose reception at all.
