I just wanted to introduce myself to everyone. Every single question I've had about my service has been answered here and for that and all of the knowledge here I am very appreciative.
I have new DirectTV service being installed tomorrow from 3 - 5 PM. I purchased from a local dealer who is also doing the install - not sure if this is normal but I feel pretty confident since I have a local store to go complain to and the persons cell phone as well. I've had the local cable service with the digital cable HD DVR for about 2 years now and I've been very pleased. However in my particular town the cable tv charter is actually with Comcast and they've been leasing it out to Insight. I've been very happy with Insight and will continue to keep my cable modem, however 1/1/08 Comcast is revoking that lease and my service will become Comcast. I've not heard good things about comcast all around and since they can't come to an agreement with the Big Ten Network I'm dumping cable and going for DirecTV.
I live in in apartment; I've already received permission to have my dish installed anyway I like. I've verified that I have an unobstructed view to the southwestern sky, the dealer told me that for my area I need to be looking at about 205 degrees and that is clear to an open field. I can't create any new holes in the outside of the apartment but I've spoken with the dealer and he said he is familar with, has used, and has in stock "flat coax". My install should be an HR20 and two other standard receivers. I called and confirmed my install appointment today. I've made sure that the areas he'll need access too (behind all 3 televisions, etc) are free of any extra clutter and put the magic slider things on the entertainment center so it'll scoot right out of the way.
I've got some quick-crete and a 5 gallon bucket if for some reason we need to do the dish-in-a-bucket but I'm not sure the bigger dish for the HR20 will even do that. I'll have some coffee and water and coke available for the tech to be a nice guy. I have a UPS to put on the HR20 and my cables are all very neat and while not labeled, very straight forward.
Here are my questions:
How many cables will I have running into the house ? How many will need to go to the HR20? I'm assuming two to the HR20 (at least that's what I've read) so will there be 4 cables coming in the house? or can we split the two off?
I'm a little worried about how we're going to get cables around the apartment. There is a location where the cable tv comes into the apartment but it comes in on the complete other side of the apartment. I've been a little leary about the local installer/dealer, I feel good knowing that he's local but I had to call to confirm the install appointment myself. He had to call me back 3 times to ask questions after I called him on the phone to sign up (I offered to come to the store but he said it could be done in person) and when I did call to sign up I had to remind him that I needed to select a package..
Are there any suggestions anyone might have to make things go smoother? Do I have all of my bases installed. I'm pretty confident that eventually everything will work but my worst nightmare would be having the install delayed because of something minor that could of been fixed ahead of time.
