Composite video (yellow RCA plug): Baseband video fed directly to the input jack of the VCR or TV. Bypasses the modulator and tuner. The red and white cables carry analog stereo sound.

Component video (3 RCA plugs): aka YPbPr. Chroma is split into blue and red. Despite the color of the plugs, this is not RGB. HDTV models only. No sound - add red/whi or optical cable.

Not so - my last SDTV (Panasonic 27") had component input, and pretty much every EDTV does as well. Non-HDTVs have component input for use with progressive scan DVD players (480p). Older SDTVs won't have them, but I expect most SDTVs still in stores (amazingly, they're still out there :) ) will have a component input.

I think that Boba was probably referring to the various satellite receivers, which only have component outputs on the HD models. My old ED projector also had component inputs.

I was actually talking about the physcial characteristics of the cable, are they coaxial, sheilded, or twin pair.. what?
I know this seems like a dumb question, but I am old and trying to be as smart as my Granddaugther.
Thanks

they have different colors.
the cables themselves are (in general) identical except for color.
In common usage, the red/white are used for right and left stereo sound, while the yellow carries the entire picture.
the red-green-blue replace the yellow, and because they allow more information than just one cable, they provide superior picture.
but you still use the red/white (although orange/white is becoming more common)
The cables themselves are coaxial.
They are considered coax.
