In regard to "Light Reading's Digital Cable News" website of October 3, 2007 there are several details of the technical capacity / upgrade possibilities of the cable giant. (Sorry can't post the hyperlink URL webaddress as a newbie). w w w dot l i g h t r e a d i n g dot c o m The article doesn't specify the cost / benefit analysis. As a consumer I've been trying to assess the cable giant's response to D* HD triumph. The only thing I like about cable is the month to month financial arrangement vs. a two year contractual committment with DBS. However, I'm ready to bite on the D* bonanza of HD channels ! My perception is that the cable giant is blowing smoke about Switched Digital Video, etc. As a consumer, I don't think the cable giant has the desire, plan, funds, or technical ability to go toe-to-toe with D* on total number of HD channels. Would appreciate the perspective of industry professionals about the information contained in that article.

Now that I've overcome my reluctance to sign a contract with D*, the only other obstacle is whether the HD channels are HD-lite, stretch-o-vision or actually useful and as advertised. Please advise. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Switched video isn't the bandwidth answer, IMO. As viewing habits become more diverse those switched channels will be on using the bandwidth that turning them off saves. The article also talks about a more efficient MPEG-2, sounds like HD Lite.

The future will tell...
