Anyone now what would cause my 501 to strangely crash on the program guide. Had this happen to me 3 times today. If I switch to the program guide, the guide shows up but "freezes" you cannot advance channels, look forward into later hours, etc and even the little PIP box blanks out and reads "getting program info from satellite" or some such nonsense. This didn't start till today. I had to pull my smart card to get the problem to clear.
Also, noticed since yesterday the fan never seems to power off. It runs and runs (somewhat annoying at times). It used to power down after the receiver had been shut off for 5 minutes or so. Anyone know if Dish released a new software upgrade that may be messing things up for me???
Run a check switch and see if you are getting the 110 signal if you are when you clear out of the menu it should go to downloading the guide. If you don't go to the download, try pausing the picture to see if the hard drive is still working.

Mine does that if the dish is snow-covered at 3 am (like last night). That goes with the "missing" 110 idea.
Basically I try the smart card trick or reboot it (hold the power button for several seconds until both LEDs flash) and that seems to fix it--for a while.
As for the fan, mine does shut off shortly after I power off.

Every time E* spools a new software release, it is a given you will need to re-boot. The symptoms you described sound like you may have received a belated or new upgrade. It is a good idea to note your current software version and if it happens again in the mo's to come, check again and see if the version has changed after reboot. Then you can just shake your head. I personally wish the darn thing would just auto prompt and state, a new upgrade has been received, do you want to reboot now? and get it over with.

Maybe a stupid question....but how exactly do I "reboot"? I know how to do it on a pc...but on the 501??? Is there a series of commands I need to hit or something?

Go to the front panel of the 501, press and hold the power button down until both the Green and Red LEDS's are lit up. Release the power button. The receiver will then recycle, doing some Self tests and reboot, also if the guide data is not current the receiver will reload it as well.
