Hi ...

QUES: How many channels can a tp carry?

I am asking this because I read where SkyAngel uses 2 tp's yet they carry 24 channels plus 12 music/radio.

If they have the capacity to carry more channels I have a suggestion for them.

Anywhere from 1 (I don't believe a channel can be split over more that one transponder) to... Well. I don't know. But it's definately a lot. I'd guess at least 50, maybe more. But the picture and sound will be TERRIBLE.

Sky Angel has 20 video and 16 audio channels. I am not a sub but that is a fair amount of compression. They could add more but picture and sound qualirty would degrade.

Sky Angel carries 10 video and 8 audio channels per transponder. It's a lot to squeeze in there. But they did it! PQ on some channels is horrible. but many of their channels are talking heads most of the time anyway. The three channels I watch most on Sky are at least okay... (Catholic [gasp!]FamilyLand, FaithTV and the newest Pax affilieate "Guardian Network".

Dish has shoved as many as 14 video channels on one transponder for a short while. 12 video channels is as much as they normarlly did. 8 video and a couple of audio per transponder seems to provide the best compromise (lots of channels for the "collectors" and decent PQ for the pseudo-videophiles)

See ya
Tony

By all means, please make your suggestions to Sky Angel.
They have experienced a considerable amount of programmer
"churn", and would probably appreciate having the information,
just in case it happens again.

Also, when their lease agreement with DISH expires (I'm not
sure when), they can take back another of their transponders,
if needed. The more widely attractive the package, the more
subscribers they're likely to get. They need to fund their
planned worldwide service from three orbital slots.
