Steching HD channels

I have seen some discussion where peopel have suggested to others that they should stretch the programming that has pillar boxes on HD channels. I am unable to do this and was wondring if others can do this or if these peoplemaking these suggestions are wrong?

Mixer I can not do this either any program on HD channels. I wish we can have letter box on 16:9 on the HR20

Right now it is only a suggestion and that is all it may ever be but it would be nice if it was added.

I would use it because I hate the bars on the side so I still use the SD version right now for any shows that are not in 16x9 so I can stretch them to fill the screen.

Thing is though that there are members here that are suggesting that others use this as if it can actually be done.

I think it may be a setting on their televisions. My TV will eliminate the pillar bars on any programming if I ask it to (I very rarely ask it to)

Ah so is it possible I can not do this because I have Native On?

I will have to try with Native Off.

Some displays (like mine) have a stretch mode in both 480 and 1080i scan rates. Not that I would ever use it.

Right but can these be used whether HR20 is Native On or Off?

I have Native On and I can not do this with my TV.

The ability to stretch program material sent to the TV in 720p or 1080i depends on the TV. My Sony HDTV can stretch Hi Res but my Sharp HDTV cannot. Both can stretch 480i/p.

I can do it both ways but it's a pain in the butt IMO.

I just take what they give me.

I have Native On and I can not do this with my TV.Many 1st gen HDTVs cannot alter a 1080i image. Mitsubishi's sets in particular were this way -- I had a 2002 model set that behaved like that. One of the reasons I upgraded (poor image processing in general being another). Most sets made since HDMI came in can do this. One of the things I learned with that first set is what I wanted in my second set.

Thanks for the reply. I am pretty happy with my Mitts and i will keep it as long as it is running. One thing for me is that the way it handles SD programming is way better than any new TV hands down As long as we still have majority SD it is worthwhile to have the best TV that handles both well. The next set I get will more than likely be a DLP Mitts.
