No, you need a waiver (or RV considerations) to qualify for distant locals. At this point, consider it virtually impossible to get a waiver for distants.

No not everyone. I know that if you have locals offered that you arent really able to. although some have gotten around this in the past.

Doug, mine may be gone soon with locals possibly coming, but I got my distants not that long ago, and honestly its the easiest thing ive done since Ive had D*

Interesting to hear that someone has had success recently. I'd still say that for most people it will not be that way. Even if you can get the locals via Sat, if the local carrier approves of the waiver, then DIRECTV will likely oblige. Most carriers are not so forthcoming, though.
Were the waivers for Analog, Digital or both?

Actually, didnt even get waivers that i know of. I told them how many miles away i was and they turned them on. No fussing at all.
edit: which makes me wonder if some stations give out some sort of "blanket waiver" for deep fringe areas?

I have waivers from a long time ago... long before the days of HD.
No chance D* would simply give me the distant HD versions as well?

No, they are different and you would have to qualify for digital waivers separately. I know that in some cases, there are blanket waivers for digital .. I can get LA HD channels, for example because of that. I do not get any SD locals, though.

Having the East and West coast network channels was great, but my locals come in (both SD and HD) via the satellite, so it's not really doing much for me anymore.

This must be one of those cases then. I wasnt aware of it though, and honestly didnt want to ask them many questions

what about in areas where direct does not offer locals yet?Only if you're not able to receive your locals via OTA and you still need your locals stations to grant you a waiver, which is not always easy. DirecTV not offering your locals does not factor into the equation.

Granting waivers are up to your local stations, and some of these aren't even local. CBS local is [for me] Sacramento, but San Francisco CBS also needed to sign off on it. Now this station is over 150 miles away. Go figure.
My local CBS wouldn't agree to my wavier and I called to find out why, since I can't always get their signal. Trying to work with them at that time was a bit of a pain since as the engineer said "we never approve waivers". While I was trying to get someone to make some sense out of this, D* said they had a blanked wavier just agreed to, so they added it for me. I contacted my local and explained this hoping it would help [him], but he seemed to think the agreement was for another group of stations.
As to the HD verse SD:
For me one wavier gives me both, but the HD only comes from LA, while SD comes from both NY & LA. Last year there was a change for HD and I lost my NY feed. Mountain time gets west coast and central time gets east coast.
I got the Distant LA and NY feeds when I 1st signed up with DirecTv in '04. I told them I was 75 miles from my locals and they turned on the Distants immediately. When I went to HD in March '06 and signed up for DirecTv's HD package I told them to also turn the HD feeds for the Distants. Since I was in Ky. I was allowed to get the HDs from NYC but not LA due to FCC ruling in August '05(I think that the date). So I get SD Distants from LA and NYC and HD Distants from NYC. My locals in HD still aren't available via the Satellite and it will be interesting to see if DirecTv cuts off my NYC HDs once my local in HD due come off the Bird. I have seen a few post from guys that still have Distant HD feeds even though they now get their HD locals off the Satellite, I just hope I can keep NY HDs in future.

I have HD locals and a couple of DNS still. From what I've read awhile back, don't try to make any changes to your DNS as this will cause problems. Just leave them alone [as I have done].

And im with VOS on this, if you have them, dont change anything that is related to DNS unless you dont mind losing them

Im not sure if i understand what you are asking, but yes it is $1.50 per HD distant.
edit: and as VOS pointed out thats only one NY or one LA.

I'm not quite sure what you mean, but:
$1.50/month/channel of DNS is for only either LA or NY, while $2.25/month is for both SD feeds from LA & NY.

I know that 100% local carriage for either or both sat cos is a huge salvo fired across cable's bow, but of the locals I have that currently offer HD in my area, 2, neither is doing DD5.1 like the FOX- and CBS-HD feeds out of NYC I have waivers for through DIRECTV. I'm in an unserved market.
Bottom line is, I had to go through a lot to deal with lack of locals, but I did deal with it and I'm happy now. There's a good chance with the coming changes, I might not be as happy

I love having the distant networks, this coming sunday they have the charger -raiders game on 381 or2 in HD from LA cbs, but i'll be watching the cowboys-patriots on channel 380 from NY,thats the beauty of having the distant networks during football season!

If you have your locals in HD OTA and via sat, isnt that really the only reason? :D
