View Full Version : Hr15 / Hr20 on one rf remote?

I just got the hr20 installed today. Everything went very well. But I did start checking the hd channels before the installer left and some were getting the 771 error. He replaced one of the bc blocks and everything was fine.
I decided to keep the hr15 and it is in the same room. I have been using the rc32
rf remote. The new hr 20 came with rc64 rf remote. Seems to be the same remote but has a extra button called format on it for screen size.
Can you control both receivers with one remote using rf for both or do you have to use ir for one?
Thanks for any help.
Terry
You can use IR for both, RF for both, or IR on one and RF on the other, which ever you prefer.
You indicate you want to use RF for both, so here is how. Make sure you are using an RF capable remote.
Some R15's have a built in RF antenna, others need an external one. Make sure you have an antenna connected if yours needs an external one. Ditto the HR20.
First, program the AV1 slot of your remote with code 00002.
Slide switch to AV1
Push and hold MUTE and SELECT until green light for AV1 flashes twice.
Enter 00002
Light should flash twice.
Now, set the slide switch to DTV, and on your HR20 go into the setup menu, remote, and select the IR/RF setup option. Follow the instructions to setup RF control.
Finally, slide the switch to the AV1 position, and on your R15 do the same thing.

Thanks Carl, that worked great for the rc64r.
But now the rc32 won't work at all. Any ideas?
I have tried 00001,00002 codes. It looks like the rc32 is trying to access ir side.
Thanks
Terry
For the rc32rf remote to control the receivers via rf, it too will have to have the last 6 digits of the receiver ID's enter into it. So to program the remote for RF without changing the receiver:
1. dtv
2. press and hold MUTE & SELECT for two blinks
3. enter 0 0 0 0 2
4. dtv
5. press and hold MUTE & SELECT for two blinks
6. enter 9 6 1
7. press CH UP
8. enter the last 6 digits of the receiver ID #, found on a sticker in the access card compartment
9. press SELECT
Not all RC32's are RF enabled. If yours is, then follow Edmund's advice. If it is not, then you will have to get another RF remote. If it is RF capable, it should have an FCC ID number sticker on it.

Thanks for all the input, but still a no go. I was using as a rf remote on the hr15 and when I got the hr20 I tried to set it up for both now it doesn't work at all.
The rc64 is working on both in rf mode.
Are you sure the R15 receiver is set to RF? Until the recent updates the R15 accepted both IR & RF at the same time, now its one or the other. And now you have to turn on the RF through the menu.
If it is set to RF, are you entering the last 6 digits of receiver ID # for the R15?
And its very important for the device you're programming for RF, to have one of the following codes programmed to it first, 00001, 00002, or 00003.

The rc64 is working for both the hr15/hr20 and both receivers are set to rf.
I have both receivers in a closet and have a coax running to the bedroom to watch the hr15. I did not know until the install that the hr20 doesn't have an coax out like the hr15(what's up with that?). I was going to use a a/b switch so I could watch both anywhere.
Anyway I used rc32rf to control the hr15 working as an rf remote. While the installer was installing the hr20 I tried to set it up to work both receivers and somehow it is not working at all.
I tired to reprogram the remote, but notice that my ir extender lites up when I press a button like it's not working in rf mode.
Any thoughts
Thanks
Terry
If you followed the steps in my first post, and even if you punched in any six digits, it won't control your receiver, but it will have turned off the IR for the dtv device for sure. So if its still emitting IR signals on Sat keys in the dtv device, then for sure you certainly missing a step or two.
Lets reset remote:
1. press and hold MUTE & SELECT for two blinks
2. enter 9 8 1
Lets retry programming it for RF:
1. dtv
2. press and hold MUTE & SELECT for two blinks
3. enter 0 0 0 0 1
4. dtv
5. press and hold MUTE & SELECT for two blinks
6. enter 9 6 1
7. press CH UP key
8. enter the last 6 digits of receiver id # found on a sticker in the R15 access card compartment
9. press SELECT

Steps 1-3 are only necessary if programming the remote for IR.
Steps 4-9 by themselves will program the remote for RF.
Repeat steps 5-9 with remote switch in the AV1 position (BEING SURE TO USE THE RECEIVER ID FROM THE SECOND RECEIVER) to program remote for the second receiver in RF mode.
When using RF mode, the receiver mode setting (DirecTV or AV1-AV2) in the DVR remote setup screen is ignored since RF mode uses the unique receiver ID to distinguish remote commands meant for each receiver.

If the IR extender is lighting up when you press a button, that means that the remote is not in RF mode as no IR will be emitted (except for TV volume, etc) when the remote is properly programmed for RF mode.
Steps 1-3 are only necessary if programming the remote for IR.
Steps 4-9 by themselves will program the remote for RF.
Repeat steps 5-9 with remote switch in the AV1 position (BEING SURE TO USE THE RECEIVER ID FROM THE SECOND RECEIVER) to program remote for the second receiver in RF mode.

steps 5-9 won't work without the device either having code 00001, 00002, or 00003 programmed in. and since the remote isn't controlling the receiver at this time, so hes not moving from IR to RF. Hes just programming the remote. i'm assuming hes using the dtv device, but he might be applying it to the av1 or av2 device, which might have a audio or dvd code previously. so it won't harm programming code 00001 or 00002 first. GET IT!!!

OK, that's good to know because the onscreen instructions don't tell you that... they only tell you steps 5-9 which evidently won't work for AV1 or AV2 without those extra steps that you point out (which are missing from the onscreen instructions).
I guess that applies not only if you have programed AV1 or AV2 for some other device, but also if the remote has been set back to defaults, right?
Now can you tell me if this can be done.... can you program AV1 to control DVR #1 and the volume on TV #1 and then program AV2 to control DVR #2 and the volume on TV #2?

Resetting the remote did the trick.
I still can't get it to work like the rc64 to control the hr20 at dtv and hr15 at av1 in rf. But since I can't get coax out on the hr20 to push sd to the 2nd tv it doesn't matter.
Thanks for the help

Did you take note of Edmund's advice that before an AV1 or AV2 position on the remote can be programmed for RF, the switch position must first be programmed for IR with device code 00001, 00002, 00003, or 00004?

You can't do it without wasting a device on the second tv code, so either av1 or av2 has to have a second tv code programmed to it. It will work this way:
DTV device key- dvr1
Av1 - dvr2
AV2- tv code
Tv- tv code
Start by punching through AV2 tv volume to all device:
1. av2
2. press and hold MUTE & SELECT for two blinks
3. enter 9 9 3
4. press SELECT
Now restore the tv volume to the tv device:
1. tv
2. press and hold MUTE & SELECT for two blinks
3. enter 9 9 3
4. press VOL DOWN
Then:
1. dtv
2. press and hold MUTE & SELECT for two blinks
3. enter 9 9 3
4. press VOL DOWN
Now the DTV device key has the volume from the tv device, and AV1 device key has the volume from AV2 device.

Yes, I tried to set it up like the rc64 dtv at 00003 av1 at 00002.
