View Full Version : New Install: Signal and Transponder issues

My install went smoothly yesterday, considering it was 40 feet up on the roof gable, but they left in a hurray before checking all the signals on all the sats on both new boxes.

Now, I am wondering because:
1) New HR20 has 0s in the 103(a) signal. 1-8 is 89/0/91/0/96/0 and 17-24 is 0.
103(b) is is all high 90s. 99(b) 1-8 is 0/0/0/83/0/86. I have had no issues viewing content with this box.

2) New H20 in bedroom first pixelated and "melted" constantly. Then after reset it said the multiswitch was not hooked up right after acquiring the guide. Then another reset it worked, but these are signals: 103(a) 1-8 is 0/0/0/0/0/0/0 and 17-24 is 0. 103(b) is 60/0/62/0/55/0. 99(b) is all 0s. I still get a few 771 and "melting pics" with this box.

Signal strength for HR20 is: 101/95%, 110/71%, 119/89%, 99(b)/0%, 103(a)/0-90-50%, 103(b)/91%.

Signal strength for H20 is: 101/95%, 110/49-95-40%, 119/75%, 99(b)/0%, 103(a)/0%, 103(b)/58-0-56%.

The old HR10-250 upstairs works fine still.

Are they supposed to run 4 new coax from the dish to the ground block? They didn't yesterday in my case. They used female connectors to join to the existing 8 foot cables that ran to the ground block. It is 2 yrs old and I'm guessing it's copper-coated steel -- the D* default coax at that time. I asked if that would affect signal strength and they said "no." All in-house cable is less than 2 yrs old and is solid copper core. BBCs are tightly connected, as are multiswitch and grounding block connections.

Does this sound like a dish alignment issue, bad mating with the female connectors as described above, bad multiswitch or ???? They also never got me to sign a work order completion... they were in a hurry to leave... so I have a very good reason to get them back.

But, I'd like some ammo first. :)

It's not an alignment problem or you would see low readings on all of your equipment. Check the connections at the multiswitch feeding the "bad" H20. You might also try moving the H20 and connecting it where your "good" HR20 is located. See if you can isolate the problem to the H20 or the cable feeding that room.

Will do tonight -- thanks! It may be the multiswitch as I noticed no signal on HR20/tuner 2 on 103(a) signal strength test last night.

Also, what kind of multiswitch do you have? I've seen many reports of older multiswitches (see Eagle Aspen mentioned frequently) left installed with HD upgrades. Only the Zinwell WB68 and WB616 are approved to pass the new signals. I have no idea if the wrong multiswith would create the problem you're seeing..just another thing to check. Good luck!

I had zeros on my 103B odd tp's. The only channels I was mission were TBSHD, Weather HD and one other. I would have never known I was missing them until I went to every HD channel and looked. FYI.

I had zeros on my 103B odd tp's. The only channels I was mission were TBSHD, Weather HD and one other. I would have never known I was missing them until I went to every HD channel and looked. FYI.
I plan to do all that tonight.

I also so an H20 thread where someone talked about a jammed b-box (90 degree bend in the pigtail) at the back of the cabinet. I know have one of those on the HR20 and that may be a cause, too. I'll straighten it out somehow.
