Why 231-1, none of the other HD stations gets a dash?!

Because Food HD 231-1 is not a simulcast of Food 231...programming is different.

Earl Bonovich
10-10-07, 04:18 AM
Why 231-1, none of the other HD stations gets a dash?!

Because Food Network HD, is not an EXACT simulcast/match to Food Network SD

So it doesn't "replace" the SD version yet... hence the -1

syphix
10-10-07, 04:19 AM
Why 231-1, none of the other HD stations gets a dash?!Because 231 and 231-1 are SIMILAR in programming, but not exact duplicates. FoodHD is a bit different. It's not a simulcast of FoodSD.

Very underwhelming. Can we get a actual FSN HD channel? I mean, really cmon! CNBC isn't HD. Directv could have put another HD channel on in place of that faux HD channel.

CNBC is very fancy, too bad I don't ever watch this, if I want a stock quote, I will go to the internet, this channel is such a useless waste of HD bandwidth!

I bet they do some sort of DISH math, (like we saw in DISH's press release yesterday) Some sort of marketing exageration. They probably count RSNs and crap like that, and channels that only air once a week, or channels most people can't get.

So you watch all the new HD channels... plus all the old ones?

Just because it is not something you may not watch on a regular basis....
Doesn't make it a "waste" of bandwith...

There is a very large amount of people that have those channels (like CNBC) on all the time.... so while it may not be for the great picture... but at 16:9, and clear as a bell... a lot can be done there...

National RSN's will count in that count... why shouldn't they?
And anyone that wants to pay for the Sports tier... can count them.

What will not be in the count...
Are the PPV's, special event channels... and those that are not carried in national CONUS streams.

I'm excited about the Food Network. What's odd is even those the SD and HD versions of the channel have different schedules, if you compare them, it looks like they are showing the same shows except they are showing them about an hour or so apart (Good Eats, etc. show up about an hour later on the other channel). There's probably a good reason, but it seems like a lot of extra overhead to support 2 channels.

I like getting a few new channels each week even if they aren't necessarily ones I watch a lot. It's a pleasant suprise and there's always at least one or two that I watch. I figure someone else out there is happy about getting the others.

Thanks D**. And thanks again Earl for letting us know.

Earl Bonovich

Curious - Why roll it out like this if you aren't going to do big press releases with each wave?

On a technical level:
Slow and steady....
Do you turn on a FIRE HOSE in one instance, when you want to check your plumbing and faucets in your home?

On a market/marketting level:
What has more impact to the "market" and consumer perspective...
One MASSIVE announcement, or a bunch of little ones...

Look at the number of people that are logged in this morning, as compared to the initial launch date...

The more HD channels the better, I don't care if I watch that station every day, once a month, or once a year. The more channels providing HD the more their competitors will make the jump, till everyone is there.... Of course then we will have to find something else to anticipate.....

The rumored list I've seen floating around here on specific channel launch dates, seems to continue to be close to accurate, which means I'll get my FSN and FSPT RSNs next week if it holds.... :D

I'm not a marketing expert, but I have to disagree with Earl...I think you'd get a lot bang for the buck if you're in the news every week launching even more channels as opposed to one massive news release at the end (you can do the one massive one at the end as well !)...

I just thought of one channel that I would love to see in HD: the soccer channel...

As long as channels I really want are not prevented from being added due to lack of bandwidth, which will not happen for a long time, I don't mind any channel being carried. It's only a waste if if prevents me from having a channel I want. If I had my way, they would not carry any hack pseudo news outfits like cnn or msnbc, but DirecTV is a business and thus must cater to a large group of people. It is impossible for each subscriber to have only the channels they want without some kind of ala carte system. And, that would cause prices to skyrocket as they would have to drop shopping and special interest channels that pay to be carried as no one picks them.

Bottom line. There is plenty of room for everyone's favorites. Don't be selfish.

Thought I was keeping up better than this - don't remember seeing a list of rumored stations - can you point to the one for the FSN RSN's? Would love to see OU/Missouri this weekend. In the Dallas area - they don't even carry the simulcast down in the 90's. It's reported they do to other parts of the country - but the 2 previous times OU was on this year (this is FSNSW territory) - they've not put it on in HD once. Getting irritating - was hoping for national launch this week so I wouldn't have to suffer that PQ again.

There's alot of RSNs to come which will pad the number.

The only thing to mess up the final number of HD channels by the end of October is if the stations aren't ready to launch yet. Like Speed, which got pushed back to February, 2008.

They should be close to 70 by 10/31 and 100 by 12/31.

I would REALLY like to see Fox Sports Detroit on one of these next rollouts. I know it says it was scheduled for this month and hopefully that is still true. They aren't putting the HD feed up in the 90's unfortunatley. For somereason I keep getting the baseball games that are already on TBS there though. I will live watching the SD Wings games, but hope to get the HD broadcast really soon. :)

As a movie lover I am THRILLED with MGM-HD.

Loads of classic, vintage movies from the '30s through the '90s -- I can only sample the Michael Caine flick BILLION DOLLAR BRAIN so far but the roster of movies coming up in the next few days is really exciting.

For me I'd just as soon see a channel that's more like TCM in HD than any of the "modern" channels that show SHREK 24/7, so I'm really excited by this addition! :)

It looks like the '101' is in HD today. It shows up as 720p. So, maybe they launched 5 today instead of 4 and that is the reason for 27 to 32?

I think you'd get a lot bang for the buck if you're in the news every week launching even more channels as opposed to one massive news release at the end (you can do the one massive one at the end as well !)...Doing interim press releases can't hurt because you're not going to disappoint anyone with channels that don't show up because they're already there. The problem is that it may cause people to keep score and if they don't add all the promised channels at the end, it may generate some grumbling. There are already a couple of posts this morning about concerns with meeting the revised goal.

I still think there's 1 more HD RSN this morning than there was last night. I'm at work now, so I can't look but the 600 HD listings looked longer this morning.

Again, maybe I'm just nuts.

FSNMW has been showing up with HD next to the football games for the last couple of weeks, but haven't actually been in HD. That channel is in the 640s I think. Maybe that is the channel you are thinking of.

OU/Missouri would be great in HD this weekend. Hope they throw that game to the 95 channel.

Thanks for the update - I had missed that one. I guess its nice to know they are around the corner - but it would just be nice to get the simulcast on channel 96 - which they haven't been doing even for the home DMA of FSNSW. PQ on 643 is horrible. I watched parts of the OSU/A&M game there last week. Same as always - horrible. Then later on the news and ESPN as they played highlight - even though it wasn't HD - the SD picture quality from the highlights was 10 times better than the original 643 picutre - an amazing difference.

You may want to check out the HD RSN's that did launch last week. My RSN (Fox Sports South) hasn't launched in HD yet, but I was able to watch the Fox Sports games in HD on channel 640 last Saturday. I think if they are showing the same game that your local RSN is showing then you should have access to the HD version on that channel. Hopefully that makes sense. (or if you have the sports pack I know you can watch any of the available HD RSN's).

Exactly right, Earl. I don't watch all the time, but I watch one of the business shows for a few minutes to a couple of hours every day. CNBC is now the ONLY one to watch. Great info, great format and, as you said, crystal clear.

If you have no interest in the business world, don't watch it. If you are dependent on investments for your future retirement (hopefully you have a 401K or comparable?) or to maintain your current retirement, this new HD channel provides a relevant and fascinating insight into your status. And the other competing networks better find their way to HD quickly or they will lose their audience. It took only one look for me to permanently switch to CNBC HD+.

Two things, first...FSN Midwest's HD logo has been showing up on the EPG as far back as two years ago, and it never has shown a HD telecast. It's a constant error with the EPG.
Second, all of the NHLCI channels now have a -1 HD channel as well as a regular channel number. Does anybody have any information on D*'s plans for these channels?

Way to go, DirecTV! Pretty obvious around these parts that the only customers Mediacom is going to have left are blue hairs who don't have a clue what HD is, everyone else is going to bolt, has bolted, or will soon bolt to satellite for BTN and HD.

Didn't you see Mediacom is doing away with their analog channels to make room for more HD? I'm sure the channels will be flooding in shortly...Just glad I switched and don't have to wait. :D

Thank goodness for diverstiy. Amazing that differnent people on this board have different interests and desires. There are already more channels that I can watch and even if I could record them all I don't have the time to watch everything I'd like to see.
I think D* is doing a great job rolling things out. I also would bet that 50% or more of D* subscribers don't even know that there are new HD channels. In my household if I didn't go on this board we wouldn't know. Even if D* advertised on TV we wouldn't see it since we record everything and fast forward over the ads, which is sort of ironic that D* gives you the ability to not see what they are trying to tell you.

I am a big Laker fan too and am looking forward to FSN coming soon. I wish they would do KCAL too but it looks like they are not going to. I did buy a Radio Shack amplified indoor antenna and it did pick up the HD feed pretty good here in Huntington Beach, although lasts nights game was in SD

CNBC-HD Knows how to work a screen... gotta give 'em some serious credit!!! :)

I took a quick look at CNBC this AM, and I was pleased with the creative use of the 16x9 layout.

I've been waiting for the broadcast nets, ESPN, et al, to do something similar with the extra space. Right now, they're just centering the action and providing a wider vista, but not giving us anything additional (beyond a beautiful picture, of course).

For example, hockey casts could show the lines & defense pairs on ice at all times, or at least flash it when the lines change. Baseball could show more stats & leave them up, similar to what mlb.com gameday does.

There's a lot that can be done, but I haven't seen much thinking outside the box on HD sports.

It's not the day games that is the problem. I was able to watch several games in HD on other FSN, but the night game (which was OSU/A&M) was the night game and was not being shown on the HD sports networks that are available. The OU game is at 5:30 on Saturday and the guide is showing that no Sports Pack channels are showing it in HD.

Not complaining, just was hoping that one of the FSN's would have gone HD by now.

Geez, some of you guys are extremely impatient! Sure, they've been talking about these HD channels for a year now, but when they just started turning them on a few weeks ago and we all knew it was going to be a staggered rollout, I can't say that D* is out of line.

Yes 640 was in HD last week. As you said the Texas-Iowa State game is in HD at 11:30 am Central, but unfortunately that station is showing the Northern Illinois game starting at 4:00 pm so I don't think you will be able to get the Mizzou-OU game on that station unless they join it in progress or show it on tape delay which stinks.

Unless Directv puts the HD version on like channel 96 I don't think you will be able to get Mizzou-OU in HD anywhere.

I sure hope you are joking. She will make a multi-year change because something is weeks away? I really don't get this reasoning but I see people who change their providers on a yearly basis because of slight variations. I don't get that kind of logic nor do I understand why anyone would completely upheave their lives (including the time it takes to get an installer and learn a new system) for such minimal difference.

Oh, just tell her that you WANT to watch the BTN game on one of the alternates and you are unhappy too. Maybe that will work...

I am especially pleased with the Smithsonian channel and now the MGM channel. Only disappointment for me is no FSN Indiana in HD. I count 4 new ones. FoodHD (231-1), MGMHD (255), NGCHD (276), and CNBCHD (355)

I am truly impressed by what DirecTV has been able to accomplish with MPEG4. The new channels look GREAT!

The 231-1 channel number for Food HD is not a hit in my house :) but we're learning to deal.

I explained to my wife and 7 month old that Food HD is a separate channel and that's why it has a -1. They suggested (at least my wife did) that DirecTV move the shopping channel on 232 and put it there. :p

I am very glad D* is rolling out these new channels in batches. We are in DVR overload with HD recordings!

Each time we sample one of these new HD channels either my wife or I see a program or HD movie we never watched before and it gets added to the DVR "To Do" list. More than once unwatched programs from last week get deleted to make room for new stuff from this week's new HD channels . There is more new HD than we have time for.

We are waiting for HGTV-HD too, which is one of our favorites. But until it arrives ( and it will) we are in HD heaven right now just trying to watch the new HD channels we already have ! :D :D :D

It's a very exciting time indeed. My wife and I have created about 5 new series to record since the rollout started. Looks like we'll need one of those 750GB eSata drives soon

This morning my TIVO had a message announcing that about seven other HD channels were being added, including FX, SPEED and FOOD(?) (two of my favorite things). However, these TIVO notes are usually days early. I am really hoping that SPEED will be HD before the Brazillian Grand Prix next weekend. Does anyone know if the F1 races will be in HD?

Are we ever going to get AMCHD? I want to watch Mad Men in HD. My parents have it in HD on Comcast.

I think that was on the list that I saw this morning, but I can't remember clearly (it was, after all, morning:rolleyes: ).

If I did not delete the message, I will post the list here tonight.

UPDATE: I deleted the message, so no details. I must believe that if enough people are watching AMC (and they know who you are) then the HD will be rolled out soon enough.

I'm hoping for MSNBC.

At this time, it looks like all of the NBC Universal channels that are in HD are on D* right now. You can see the uplink info on their website: https://www.nbcunetworks.com/default.aspx Click on the Technical Specs link.

Hey! Another F1 fanatic! I doubt that Bernie Ecclestone would spring for HD on the world-wide feed, but maybe next year at some of the Asian races the electronics manufacturers will show-off their stuff for the GP world with some state of the art mini HD cameras on the cars. Enyoy the Brazillian GP - it's going to be a true horse race to the end! Love to see Hamilton pull this off as a rookie.

Didn't you see Mediacom is doing away with their analog channels to make room for more HD? I'm sure the channels will be flooding in shortly...Just glad I switched and don't have to wait. :D

Just wait until the Mediacom customers will have to rent digital boxes because their analog tuners won't work anymore. This will push many of the customers to DirecTV

Speed won't be televising HD until next year and the Daytona 500. That's their official HD Launch. They may choose to rebroadcast the 480p widescreen version of the F1 feeds, but I wouldn't count on it.

I am in Chart E of http://www.dbstalk.com/showpost.php?p=1127555&postcount=8 (FSN North). It doesn't appear that there is a scheduled date for when FSN North goes HD. There is a question/answer, but I am not sure what it means. Does it mean that I can get HD games for FSN North on ch. 96?

•Which RSNs feature HD Games Only in the Spot Beam Territory?
oDIRECTV will continue to offer HD games from RSNs in Chart E below in Spot Beam Territory:

If you are in the Minneapolis DMA, yes.

Those channels should go national when D11 is operational.

Thanks. After doing a little digging, I've discovered that I while I get FSN North, and live about an hour SE of Minneapolis, I am not in the MN DMA (I had no reason to care nor figure this out before).

Thanks again.

Why oh WHY are many of these "HD" channels stretching their 4:3 material????

Don't they know that the people who want their screen filled can press a button on their HDTV remote to accomplish the stretch? Meanwhile, they make it look very bad for EVERYONE.

I am very saddened by the complete "not getting it" on behalf of these channels. Do they think stretched junk is watchable???
