D* does not even have a 722 unit. D* = Direct, E* = Echostar (Dish). Usually E* will not allow customers to install HD units. You may get lucky and talk them into it, but don't hold your breath.

Installed the dish on a pole and got it all pointed correctly using an inexpensive satellite finder I had along with a small TV I hooked up next to the dish. After getting it all adjusted and locked in I called Dish and had them un-provision my old 501 unit and activate the new 622. A few weeks later when I FINALLY received my new LCD I called Dish back and had them upgrade me to the AEP and the HD Programming package. :D

You purchased outright, Dish does not know that until you call them. If you order thru Dish (like OP did), Dish will only lease it (not sell outright) and will only let their techs hook it up.
I would assume (I know that's alot LOL) that if you are upgrading a 622 to 722 they would allow a self install. After all they do allow you to replace a broken 622 yourself and since the 622 and the 722 are esentially the same unit (like the 501 and 508) what is the big deal?
If you are replacing or adding a new 622/722 then yes I can see them wanting a visit because new equipment will be needed - new LNB, new wire etc as the 622/722 needs two lines.

-JBMy 622 came with a splitter and the instructions showed to hook it up to the RG6 cable right before the receiver. I haven't noticed any problems using the splitter and just wonder if there is a difference if I just use the other RG6 straight into the box and do away the splitter???

I saw that but the installer still used two separate lines for me.

Not for me, upraded to the 722 from a 622 about a month ago, I asked if it was possible to have it shipped as I work graveyard and hate to be up all day waiting for installers, and I was told simply "no". Nothing about my setup changed he just had to come in and unplug the 622 and plug in 722.

I would have a nice talk with a supervisor if they told me that.
I fail to see how Dish allows us to self-swap a broken 622 or 722 with an identical replacement yet if we upgrade to the same unit (different hard drive size) we are somehow unqualified to make the swap.

This is not a splitter, it is a DPP Separator. If you have Dish Pro Plus lnb's you can use this to save running two lines to dual tuner receiver. If you do not have DPP you have to run two lines and cannot use the Separator. If you take the Separator out of your setup you will lose the second tuner on the unit and will cause problems with the receiver and trying to run unit on one line is not recommended. If you want to run a second line, and you add more receivers, you would need additional switches which could run you a lot more money.

I bought a 722 off of Ebay replaced a leased 622 and installed it myself. I sent the
leased 622 back to E*. There was a hassle with E*, which I covered in another
thread because E* set the status of my other 622, which I purchased on Ebay
to leased, but E* eventually set the status back to purchased. Are you leasing the
722 or buying? You do not say.

I am acquiring the 722 from Dish (leased unit), so it appears from all responses I must allow their reps to install. My frustration is that, after following this board for years, having been a Dish customer for 9 years and installing/upgrading my equipment a number of times, I think (!) I know more than some of the installers who show up (per the stories on this forum!)
Thanks,
Mike
