Does anyone know whats in the works for Samsung or Directv. For the HR20's to
get a software update to stop the audio shutdowns. Ive had the 480's shutdown since i got the 40" LCD. Now I unplug the HDMI cable and plug it back in to get audio back. I dont want to wear out the TV's board. Some days its once or twice. Sometimes 5 times. Some it doesnt happens. And this is only watching in the evenings after work.

What I do for my big DLP is just jump thru the inputs. That always takes care of it. I also had this problem with the HR10, I'm pretty sure this is a samsung problem.
BTW, I haven't had this problem lately, perhaps the next national release of software will fix yours too?
(While I still contend this is Samsung's problem, if DIRECTV created a fix, that would be a big WooHOO for them!)
Cheers,
Tom

It worked Tom. Just had a drop out during the LSU game. Switched inputs. Worked great!:D

I use HDMI for video only and my AV receiver for the audio for both the HR20 and HD DVD player so I haven't noticed the audio cutting out on my Sammy

Wow, I don't have dropouts while watching, always when I turn the TV on. I'd consider changing cables and/or checking with Samsung. This doesn't (forgive me) sound good.
Am happy my suggestion helped.
Cheers,
Tom

There may be software updates for the samsung tv. most have to do with hdmi issues. contact a service center or for web info go to servicematters.com click on samsung tech info then it will provide a link to the samsung GSPN site with generic login. (Note that servicematters relates to appliances but samsung site is everything)

I have a Samsung LCD connected to an H20 via a single HDMI cable and have not had any audio dropouts whatsoever. I also have a Samsung DLP connected to an HR20 but the audio goes through an AVR.

I am having the same problem with the same Samsung LCD TV. Complete loss of audio. Problem can happen on any channel. Only way to restore the audio is to either power off the receiver, or to cycle through the inputs as suggested previously in this thread. I have seen this fix the issue for days or hours, but I have also seen this issue happen, cleared it, and is comes back less than 10 minutes later.
I initially had an HR20-100, and after seeing the issue on a daily basis when I first got an HD DVR, I called D*, complained, and they sent out a new receiver. I was sent an HR20-700, and I still see the issue. Not quite as frequently, but still enough to be a major nuisance.
I have swapped out HDMI cables, tried connecting the HDMI cable to the other HDMI input on the TV, tried using composite cable, and tried the composite on multiple inputs on the TV. Different cables or different inputs did not help the issue.
The issue for me appears to always occur after the receiver has been on for a long period of time (several hours). Really don't have a clue as to what causes it, but my guess had always been the receiver is running too hot. Not sure what normal operating temp is for the HR20-700, but mine is usually about 127 degrees.
I would be really interested to know if anyone else is seeing this issue, and if there is a permanent solution. If the internal temp is really the issue, I am curious if the new HR21-700 might help.
I was considering a samsung but reading alot of reviews of several of their LCD's mentioning problems with audio dropouts. I heard of a firmware update for those models but one or two reviewers said it didnt help. Im going to hold off on samsung for a while

What is strange is I bought the TV and had it for about 2 months without HD, and had an R15-300 hooked up via composites, and I never had an audio dropout problem during that time.
As soon as I got the HR20-100, then the 700, the problem started. I figured maybe it was a problem with the HDMI cable or HDMI inputs on the TV (since they weren't used with the R15), but when I tried the same composite cable that had worked for 2 months with the R15-300, it still had the issue. Seems like some type of incompatibility between the Samsungs and HR20's.

Thanks to 506PIR for his post, as it helped me find the possible resolution to the problem.

The link lists several Samsung LCD and Plasma TV's with certain firmware versions that are known to have the issue when connected via HDMI to devices.
There is a number to call where you can get a download or USB flash drive sent to you to update the firmware.
What is interesting though, is that looking again, I have the LNT4053H, which is slightly different than the LNT4042H of the original poster of this thread. One of the biggest differences is the 42H doesn't have a USB port, so not sure how one would be able to update that model.
