The world is changing, the sky is falling ...typical outlook for Hollywood and all their cohorts (music, networks, etc)
Since Video and audio entertainment began in the last 100 years, the producers have continually attempted to use the Courts and Congress to achieve what they couldn't achieve in an unfettered world, namely extreme profit and charges for their niche.
This began with the "licensing" of audio and video spectrum, continued with the arbitrary standard of tv's through incidents like the 4 or 5 cable and satellite bills of the last 2 decades.
Their latest problems?
1. DVD copying
2. Music trading
and now the latest PVR's
It should seem obvious to all NON-lawyers that these holding actions NEVER overcome technology in the long run and are only costly delays that are eventually overcome through engineering.
It's been said over and over by the whiners of the industry that if they can't get "reasonable" profit for their "artistic" efforts that they will be disincentivized to produce their "artistic" product.
What really needs to be done is to establish a reasonable price structure for their product so that most people would pay it. There will always be people who are looking to get something for nothing but if the charge is reasonable they will be ostracized by society as leeches.
That being said, i can only hope that individuals such as Jerry Springer, Oprah Winfrey, Rosie O'Donnell could be so disincentivized as to quit throwing their crap at mass audiences due to "PVR's" but i highly doubt that anything could actually stop them.
