View Full Version : 501 remote and 721 remote - same IR?

I was wondering if the IR codes and/or signals for the 501 platinum remote and the 721 platinum remote were the same or different?

i.e. Will a 501 remote set to address 0 control a 721 on address 0, or only partically or not at all?

Also, does the 501 or 721 remote allow for one button (i.e. sat for the 501) for one recevier and then another button for another reciever? i.e. can a 501 or 721 platinum remote be configured to control both a 510 AND 721?

Also, is there support for the 721 remote in the better universal remotes out there?

Thanks in advance,
Scott

I can't speak for the 501, but I had to use different addresses for the 721 and my JVC D-VHS unit.

Same. I have swapped remotes because of the battery oproblem I had.

Platinum remote ALSO works all other E receivers but of course the PVR buttons dont do anything.

Except the DP, its altogether different...

For any family with >1 satellite receiver (and esp. >1 PVR receiver), it would be SUPER handy to have the remotes be interoperable and allow for 2 receivers to be controlled on a single remote. In particular, the hope would be for 501/508/721 interoperability, because the remotes are almost the same. Obviously, a 501 remote could not do PIP, because the button doesn't exist. But a 721 should be able to control a 501 and the extra button just wouldn't do anything to the 501.

That would allow the remotes to be used/reused/moved much more easily. It would be an excellent option for AUX button.

Perhaps -- if DISH just enabled the ability to quickly swap addresses (or toggle addresses), then you could simply push a botton and swap between SAT address 0 and 1. This would then enable (or give the illusion of) control of 2 sat receivers with a single 501/508/721 remote -- assuming they are IR compatible (or mostly compatible). I wish this universal remote folks would enable the ability to change addresses beyond just 0, for this same reason.

Does anyone know any secrets about how to make this work? Or just suggest to someone at DISH that this would be a great enhancement.

It would e nice if AUX could be a second dish receiver. I suggested that in the past, along with a big button remote. At least its on its way.

With the 522 something like this will be needed. I think the smart idea would be standardizing on one remote where some buttons just do nothing. Ut would help interchangeability..

Remote address 0 will reportedly control any receiver (other than a DISHPlayer) regardless of its address setting. You would normally want to choose from addresses 1-15.

Top address number is now 19 or something. I found that out when I accidently programmed in a number over 15.

Didnt know about address zero, thanks.

You could use a Pronto to control both. I am controlling my 6000 & 501 with it. If you do use a Pronto, don't ever change the address after programming, otherwise you have to learn all the codes all over again.

That means if a remote is addressed at 0 then it will interfere with all receivers, but at least you cound find an address to operate a receiver in which you do not know the code for and go in and change it to a remote code that you can use. If there is any difference it would have more codes than the 501 remotes since it came out later.
