I have been bother by fan noise, as have a number of others. Are there some people interested in plotting some termperatures in relation to fan on/off? As you can see I am a researcher by profession. But if we get an idea of what temps we are running, we can look at the impact of various interventions to stop the noise. My current temps seem to run between 103-120.

Mine seems to hover in the 105 range. i have seen it as low as 100 and as high as 110. Most of the noise from mine is the drive and not the fan. It has gotten so loud it can be heard from the other room.

Great topic..
I think when giving temps we need to look at what cabinet it is in. My is in an enclosed cabinet (large holes in the back, glass door in front). When I got this thing in July it was hot so I added a 3" computer fan, and placed it behind the 721 on the left side blowing out the back.
It's on all the time (called the silencer, but still noticebly loud).
I've been as low as 96 and about as high as 108. I shut off the fan (external), and within a half hour it rose to 130 (yikes), for now the fan stays on. I am thinking about picking up some thick rubber feet, the internal fan and a lot of openings are on the bottom but the feet on the 721 are very low, wondering how that will improve things...

Just imagine how hot it is going to get in the summer.

Nah you'd be surprised. I doubt it gets much hotter where you live than I do. My Tivo only gets up to 52 degrees Celsius, (125.6 Fahrenheit) during the hottest months. Its back down to 48 right now. Not much of a difference IMO. Thats what the fan is for, unless you messed around with it.
