View Full Version : "Unexpected Error 3" missed Heroes recording

Well, I've had the HR20-700 for a couple of months and missed my first recording. My box is about 50% full. It recorded Chuck right before Heroes with no problem.
This is somewhat concerning since my HR10 was extremely reliable over its two+ years.
Any ideas? Thx...Paul

My bedroom unit didn't get heroes either, but my livingroom unit did. I am running CE though, so I guess I should take this post there. :)

It's the HR20. No one knows why...everyone has a guess, but it happens more than it ever should on a DVR that is over a year old. Sorry, but it is the beast known as the HR20.
Happened to me two #$%@#$ weeks in a row. :( This week, it recorded fine.
This is the most unreliable receiver I've EVER used. And I've been a subscriber since 1997.

Were you recording anything else at the same time as Chuck and/or Heroes? Do any of your other shows in your prioritizer coincide with Heroes? Did anyone else use the TV when you weren't looking?

I have a question for you that missed Hero's. Did you record Chuck before that and did you pad Hero's to start early. When I have my recordings overlap like that I miss them nightly, when I just start them all when they are supposed to I have yet to miss one. Hero's recorded on both my HR20's one on CE one not, but when I pad for early starts I miss em. Just wondering if this may be what is causing this.

...or did you pad any part of it?

I had the problem the past two weeks. I didn't record chuck prior to Heroes but I did record Prison Break.
Interesting that the first week that Prison Break isn't on (MLB Playoffs), Hereos records just fine.
I've never used any padding.
It appears that after months of these reports DirecTV is beginning to look at this problem. Let's hope they can find the cause and get it fixed.
I don't have an HR20 yet (scheduled for Friday), but I have had inexplicably missed recordings on 2 different HDVR2 DirecTivos for years, so I wonder if these missed recordings are a DTV problem in general?
Tonight I looked in the ToDo list around 7:00 and saw that Dancing with the Stars and Little People, Big World were both set to record at 8. Around 8:20, I happened to notice there was no red light on the front panel while we were watching something else. Sure enough, it was not recording. Luckily I was able to start them both and it picked up the beginning from the buffer.
Stuff like this happens to me on a fairly regular basis... once a month or so.

I agree this seems like it might be the issue. See my post - I also get failed recording when using padding.

One question - are your HR20's 100's or 700's. Which one successfully recorded Heroes?

Nothing else was recording other than Chuck (no Prison Break this week). I was watching the b-ball game at the time.
Both the Chuck and Heroes programs have one minute padding on the front end. I find the one minute padding necessary since the HR20 starts recording late otherwise.
Heroes is #1 on prioritizer.
This worked fine last week. Also, I had checked the "to do" list late in the afternoon and both programs were set to record.
Well, this is discouraging to say the least.
Thx for the thoughts...Paul

You should post this in the TiVo forums. And you should have a look at the history of your HR10-250. It has FAR better reasons for why something didn't record than the HR20 does.
I've had TiVo's (SD and HD) since they first came out. I have never, ever missed even one recording with them. I've had problems with the boxes themselves - like hard drives that went bad. But I've never missed a scheduled recording that wasn't explainable (priority conflict, etc..).
I've only had the HR20 since August this year, and I've already missed about 5 shows with worthless explanations in the History (unexpected error (3)and "Partial"). The problems with the HR20 are highly unlikely to be related to what you experienced with your HR10.

Padding might have some issue with it but it's not THE issue. I've never used padding and missed the first two Heroes episodes when Prison Break was recorded just fine before it.
This week, Prison Break wasn't on and Heroes recorded fine.

Mine's an SD TiVo, not an HR10-250, but when it has happened the missed shows don't show up in the History at all. I don't know if it's because I catch it and manually start them or what. Anyway, sorry for going OT in this thread. I hope D* gets it resolved for all you having this problem. Guess I better keep all my season passes active on the SD TiVo as a backup after I get the HR20 this weekend.

That's what I've started doing. I have an old Sony SAT-60 in our bedroom that's been running nonstop for years. Never missed a recording, ever.
My HR10 had the same issue - it "Recorded" Heroes but refused to play it back due to an error. I hate to say it, but this is why they made BitTorrent. :-(

Hmmm, I've never experienced this before, but now it's happened to me four times in the last two weeks -- and both times on the same shows. It failed to record the Monday edition of "Letterman" two weeks in a row, and the same for "Back To You" on Wednesday night. I have five minutes of extra pad on Letterman, but that's it. And no other shows recording in the vicinity. Weird. Oh well -- at least I have the HR10-250 backing me up.
An interesting question I'd ask is, what kind of error IS expected?!
