View Full Version : Wind Fade

We've had DirecTV for years with the round dish mounted on the wall of our home. About a month ago, we upgraded, got an HR20, new dish etc. The new dish was mounted on the roof.

Yesterday was "blustery" with frequent wind gusts in the 35 mph range. We kept losing the signal throught the day and into the evening (Search for signal error coming and going). At first I figured that the cloud cover must be heavy, but I looked out and it didn't seem that bad. I did look up at the dish and it was moving a little bit in the wind, but it didn't seem to be that much.

Could wind movement cause us to lose our signal like that? The weather yesterday was not unuusal for our area, so if we are experiencing "wind fade" it will be a pretty regular issue.

Would not take much movement, do you have 2 brace poles attached to the main pole?

If the wind is moving the dish, it's not properly anchored and some of the bolts may be loose. Do you have the 2 braces connected to the mast? Anyway, a properly mounted dish shouldn't move.

The other possibility is that there are large trees nearby that were blowing in and out of the path of the sat signal to the dish.

You may need to have the dish re-aligned. I have a pole mount. It moves on windy days. But I have never lost signals from the small movements from the wind.

Call Directv for a service call to check the mounting, should still be under warranty.

Right, and make sure the dish has those monopole "struts" on it.

For those of you that don't have the poles. You can easily fabricate a set from electrical conduit that you can get locally. Depending on the store they should have ends for the pipe that you can adapt to your mount type.

My pole mount can wobble pretty good in a high wind, but it has never caused a loss of signal. I agree with posters above, get a service call in and make sure those monopoles are used.

Thanks everyone.
We are in a newer subdivision and there are no trees anywhere near the dish that could be blocking the signal.
From the ground it appears to have the struts on the mounting. However, it was raining the day of the installation, so I could see the installer being a big hasty in completing the dish install.
We'll put in the call and see what happens.

Why would they put it on the roof? I'm assuming on some houses you have to, but on a wall under an overhang like I have it and nothing moves. In fact, my dish has gone thru, not 1, not 2, not 3, nope not 4, nope not 5, but you guessed it, 6 hurricanes! Up to about 135mph winds..

A good wall-mount is not always possible. To mount it on the wall of my house for example, I'd have to cut down three coconut trees, two sea-grapes, and a huge ficus (in the neighbors yard) to get a LOS. Then, due to my low hip roof, the dish would end up at about head high. I elected to put it on a post in the backyard instead.
