As I continue to recommend Dish to anyone who will listen, I recently needed to do an analysis for a friend of mine. Because Cablevision's Optimum Online service is very popular (and expensive), most people who have cable on Long Island never think to switch to satellite because they will be charged $10 more for the online service if they don't have the Family Cable service as a minimum. Based on this fact, I did the following analysis:

Dish (based on Digital Home Plan):
AT150 $45.99
Locals $ 5.99
HBO & Starz $22.99
Total $74.97

Cablevision Digital Silver:
Service (includes HBO, Starz, Locals) $64.95
Each box $ 3.02
Each T.V. $ 2.50
Total $70.47

If they switch from Cablevision to Dish and keep their Optimum Online, they would have to add $10 to their Dish total. That would make it $14.50 more per month to have similar satellite service vs. Cablevision. Without factoring in Optimum Online, Dish is still $4.50 more per month. This is why Dish is a hard sell here on Long Island, New York, at least from a cost/programming perspective.

$64.95 for HBO, Startz and Digital basic!!!
That's a ton better than the deal here with Time Warner. That same package on 1 TV would be:

$37.75 analog basic
$32.95 digital basic+ 2 premiums
+ 5.25% franchise fee
= $74.41
and that's just for 1 TV. A second digital receiver is $7.95 here making it $82.77 on 2 TVs

Cablevisions Digital Silver is not their basic digital tier. It includes all channels except for the Showtimes,The Movie Channels and Cinemax.

Optimum online though isn't really that expensive, when you consider that you're getting an 8MB down 1MB up connection for $50/month.

I don't know the speed limits here in NJ, but I'm only paying 39.95 for Optimum online.

It's always 8m/1m but may vary based on your neighbors and their usage. $39.95 is the price with Cablevision cable TV, it costs $10 more without cable TV.

As of Christmas Eve I am adding Time Warner tv service to to existing Road Runner account. I am going with Expanded value package, adding the digital tier, getting Showtime and HBO for $78.20 This includes my Road Runner. I will keep dish for Superstations and local package on a single receiver. Next December I will decide if TW stays.
